Bethesda team diary sheds new light on Hearthfire

  • Comment
A team diary on the Elder Scrolls website reveals the background of the development of the next Skyrim DLC 'Hearthfire'.

Like Dawnguard, Hearthfire's inception came out of Bethesda Game Studios' first-ever "Game Jam", a weeklong exercise where members of the team shared in-game ideas for expanding Skyrim.

"When the Game Jam invitation arrived, I was looking for something different from what I'd traditionally do as a designer," lead designer, Bruce Nesmith recollected. "To make it a reality, I knew I needed an artist to tag team, so I approached Robert [Wisnewski] and we collaborated on the project that was presented to the team."

Wisnewski, an environmental artist for Skyrim, was inspired to expand upon the game's housing options in large part because of his enthusiasm for Skyrim's crafting systems.

"It started as a small idea to expand on the crafting element of the game because alchemy, smithing and enchanting were things I was interested in when we were playtesting the game," said Wisnewski.

Meanwhile Nesmith, a fan of the popular game Minecraft, wanted players to have more ways to create content in the game. "Being a fan of [Minecraft], I asked, ‘Why can't I build things in our game?'"

The diary also has some new screenshots from Hearthfire. The DLC is due out tomorrow.

all m stating is that bethesda should not be worshiped and loved for discrimination against pc and ps3 gamers

Where the heck do you get this from? How EXACTLY are PC gamers being 'discriminated' against by Bethesda? How are PS3 gamers being 'discriminated' against by Bethesda?

Where is the evidence for either of these statements? The PC got the CK before there was ANY DLC for the 360. That enabled the modding community to produce MASSES of free content. No CK, and 90% of the mods we have today would be non-existent. Bethesda didn't have to release that at all, they chose to.

if they hate pc and ps3 and refuse to provide eual support then they need to announce that haerth fire and all future dlc is canceled for any system other than xbox due to the fact that they do not want thire games on platforms other than 360

What the holy hell are you talking about? You might have a degree in Game Design, but you clearly know bugger all about support processes. I do. I do it professionally. Every system is different. Expertise levels are required for different systems that may not be present in the organisation - and these expertise levels can change depending on the complexities of a given problem. Different systems just have different capabilities. The 360 and the PC get pretty equal support because the hardware is so similar - the 360 had a 2x DLC 1x month exclusivity deal that is now over. The PC on the other hand, gets each regular patch first because they don't have to go through the 360 Certification process. The PS3 is a PITA to write for, and has VERY limited memory. It requires a dedicated skill set to code efficiently for - something that even Sony's own developers have struggled with, let alone those who develop for multiple platforms. This was a deliberate choice by Sony - if you want to complain about it, blame them.

I don't think Bethesda have hit the standards they'd like for the PS3, but if you actually bothered to read anything other than posts from other misguided users/trolls you'd understand that they have apologised for this, and are doing what they can to rectify the situation with Sony's assistance.

What evidence do you have that they 'hate' the pc and ps3? There's nothing in the public domain that I can find that supports your assertion. Do you know something we don't? Maybe you are secretly monitoring in-house meetings at Bethesda?? Yeah. Didn't think so.

instead of just canceling it secretly

Once more you just make things up. They have NOT cancelled anything for any platform 'secretly' or otherwise. I'd love to know where you heard this crap. Got a link by any chance?

If you want to be really pedantic, Hearthfire has not been announced for the PC or PS3, and you can't cancel something that you haven't actually said will ever happen.

However, as you have been told before, there was a 1x month exclusivity deal with the 360 for the first 2x pieces of DLC. With the launch of Hearthfire that deal is over. It should be on the PC in early October, exactly as Dawnguard was announced and turned up just after the 1x month exclusivity period.

Get over yourself. You might have a Game Design degree, but you clearly have zero actual experience of how the industry (or a money making business in general) works. The very suggestion that Bethesda 'hate' the PC is completely nonsensical.

I think you completely misunderstood my point here mate, this post was a reply for a specific conversation which you clearly didn't read, no problem here, it was pointless anyway

Why would I be jealous of PC capabilities??? I never had anything but PC. That I think would make me a dedicated PC fanboy myself, just sensible one.
If in doubt, check image section of my profile.

I won't bother explaining myself again here, please take a few minutes to read previous posts regarding this matter and it will become clear what's my point.
    Cheers

Thank you, nightwig. I are definitely did not have knowledge of true games before your post. Thank you for having simple it down alittle so I could understand. I'm rolling my eyes as hard as I possibly can at you.

Look, Beth didn't have to release a PC version at all. They could've saved themselves a massive sum of time and money by just making it 360 exclusive, thereby avoiding the hell that is PC support. And since PCs make up a minority of their playerbase, they wouldn't have felt the loss too heavily.

Instead, PC users got massive love in the form of modding tools, resources and tutorials, simple file structures for easy mod installation, and easy in-game bug fixing with the console. I don't feel discriminated against at all. PC got the better port hands down.

And PS3 users? You have a very legitimate reason to complain. To Sony. They're the ones who purposely crippled their system, in order to make it more difficult to develop for.

In January Bethesda released first DLC for Skyrim, it was a PC exclusive and it was completely FREE.
Whoever legally bought that game must have noticed it on steam, for those who pirated the game it may not be so obvious.
PC gamers got treated long before anyone else and they got a true exclusive...
PC gamers are the only community to get Creation Kit and modding abilities in general with strong support from Bethesda's own forum an CK websites hosted by them which will NEVER be available for consoles....

That if anything would be a discrimination against console players.

There is not even a slightest hint anywhere that DLC's are cancelled for any platform.

It is clear and apparent that you mister nightwig84are a common troll  or a biased PC/PS3 fanboi without even a dash of common sense, either way any form of conversation with you is pointless and fruitless.
And on that we will finish our discussion.

I do apologise everyone else for feeding that troll...
    Off to the next topic.

If you're so jealous about a PC's capabilities, you should not blame it on Bethesda. The Creation Kit and HD DLC are things that the PC is able to do regardless if Bethesda released their own official version or not. We had HD texture packs and a modding tool (SkyEdit) that did the same things the HD DLC & CK did before the official versions were even released. The consoles do not have the power to handle a HD DLC and both are locked so that mods can not be added to the consoles. These are restrictions made by Microsoft and Sony, NOT by Bethesda so it is foolish to think they are discriminating against the consoles. The only platform being discriminated against in this case is the PS3 because of the dawnguard situation.

I do consider myself a PC fanboi, however, not because of how Bethesda releases their DLC but simply because of the freedom and capability that comes with having a PC.

I cannot remember them complaining too much then.
Now they've got Dawnguard, and Heartfire before you did!
    Now PC/PS3 is being discriminated!
Isn't what you saying utterly childish?

On top of that, there is not even a slightest hint anywhere that DLC's are cancelled for any platform. Maybe a link to your source please?

Man, you're not being serious, where did you get all those arguments from?really... I'm lost for words.

It is clear and apparent that you mister nightwig84 are a common troll  or a biased PC/PS3 "fanboi" without even a dash of common sense in your head.

Edit: This post is misunderstood by many people. I rephrased it to make my argument more clear for others. It's original form is cited above in aj7821's post.

I don't hold a degree in "game development" but I know a thing or two about project management and workings of both GameBryo and It's upgrade Creation Engine, The sheer number of variables in those products makes it extremely difficult if not impossible to test all possible configurations. And as in every project certain timeframe is set and you have to meet it, like it or not. Therefore, some bugs will happen and in some cases, others will not, i.e. I never seen a dragon flying backwards on my system and I play the game since 11.11.11.

    @nightwig84
As far as I remember, real player or gamer in this case is the one who meets the challenge and conquers it rather than squatting on forum moaning that crossbow doesn't have a custom kill anim or console players got the DLC and You didn't. That's just childish.

    @ lRoguel
I don't really care for your kudos mate. If you're annoyed by my post, it's your problem, not mine.
    Sorry for you.

I have read most of the comments about Heartfire and i see here that some pc users are already searching for it on steam the exclusivity thing with xbox is for 1 month SO for the pc users if you want to get it look for it next month from the 5 of October onwards if we are lucky.
Now for those fanboys of bethesda i was once one of you guys but since fallout new vegas and the exclusivity for xbox i scratched myself out.
I pledged myself as pc user that if i don´t have same rights as xbox users i refuse to pay any other games from bethesda from now onwards while this exclusivity thing lasts.
I already did not buy Dawnguard and i sure hell will not buy Heartfire i dont care if it is 1 dollar or 5 dollars for that matter i say not 1 dollar more for bethesda while iam being discriminated ...

You're annoyed by an honest opinion expressed in a readable format, but impressed by a wall of text that bored you halfway through? How's that work?
