Try watching this. It's really very simple once you've done it a couple times. And if you're using only a couple mods/very simple ones the only tools you'll need are Nexus Mod Manager and SKSE, both of which are covered in that link. If you start using more complex mods/a lot of mods look into downloading BOSS.

Extensible Follower Framework

In my opinion its a better follower mod, that includes a way more robust residency setting for followers. Also it doesn't touch vanilla scripts like the other follower mods do.
