Skyrim developers complete week-long mod jam

  • Comment
Kotaku has posted a video which shows Skyrim lead Todd Howard speaking at the D.I.C.E. 2012 game development conference. Howard spoke at length about a "Game Jam", held internally at Bethesda, where the Skyrim team were tasked with creating new content and porting it into the game, purely as a creative exercise. The results, I am sure you agree, are pretty mind-blowing.

Watch the video to see it all in action, but below is a full list of the new features:

- Seasonal foliage and shedding leaves on trees.
- Flow-based water shaders.
- Fully animated spears.
- Magic and ranged combat slow-motion kill-cams.
- Water arrows and a Detect Life-esque "Assassin's Vision"
- Guards that re-light torches.
- Paralysis runes.
- Moving platforms and hanging structures in dungeons.
- Fast-flowing underground currents.
- Pitch-black dungeons.
- New follower customisation, commands and favoriting.
- Adoption.
- Building of your own home (with skeletal butler).
- Combining spells for new effects.
- Goblins.
- New Draugr
- Waygate fast travel.
- Skeletal horse mounts.
- Mounted combat.
- Dragon mounts.
- Soulbug familiar.
- Kinect-based Shouts.
- SSAO.
- Better underwater visuals.
- Footprints in snow.
- Verlet surfaces for non-rigid objects (which means morningstars and flabby giants).
- Fire and ice arrows.
- Werebears.
- Lycanthropy perk tree.
- Vampire feeding.
- Becoming a flying vampire lord with vampire imp minions.
- Mudcrab animation tweaks.
- A 100 foot-tall mudcrab.

PLEASE keep in mind that these are purely "experiments", and Howard states explicitly that there is no guarantee that any of these features will make it into the game, as DLC or free updates. This possibility is not ruled out, however.

For the moment, it is encouraging to see what can be achieved with Creation Kit, and in particular the Papyrus scripting language.

I think that you should be very busy right now.

    This is just my opinion

    - Seasonal foliage and shedding leaves on trees. They wont release it wouldnt be stable on consoles
    - Flow-based water shaders. Same as above
    - Fully animated spears. Maybe in future DLC but I doubt it
    - Magic and ranged combat slow-motion kill-cams. Same as above
    - Water arrows and a Detect Life-esque Assassin's Vision Doubtful but possible
    - Guards that re-light torches. Possible in future DLC I dont think they would change every guards AI package now do you?
    - Paralysis runes. Very possible in future DLC
    - Moving platforms and hanging structures in dungeons. Possible in future DLC dungeons
    - Fast-flowing underground currents. Same as above
    - Pitch-black dungeons. Same as above
    - New follower customisation, commands and favoriting. Highly doubt they would change every followers AI packages
    - Adoption. Possible but I dont think it will make it
    - Building of your own home (with skeletal butler). Too many possible bugs to release this as DLC
    - Combining spells for new effects. Highly doubtful
    - Goblins. Maybe in future DLC one of the most likely Id say
    - New Draugr. Same as above
    - Waygate fast travel. Doubtful
    - Skeletal horse mounts. Very Doubtful
    - Mounted combat. I honestly do not think they will release this as DLC at any point
    - Dragon mounts. Same as above
    - Soulbug familiar. They could easily slip this in but whether they think its worth testing is another matter
    - Kinect-based Shouts. Too early to say Im sure they would love to release this as consoles is there biggest market would make a DLC very possible if included
    - SSAO. Wont be released as DLC in any form it would cripple consoles id say
    - Better underwater visuals. Very unlikely they would have to modify huge amounts of worldspace
    - Footprints in snow. I have no idea
    - Verlet surfaces for non-rigid objects (which means morningstars and flabby giants). No idea
    - Fire and ice arrows. Could easily be implemented but I dont think it will
    - Werebears. Highly doubtful would need heaps of testing and how would they implement it?Im sure the official thought at Bethesda is they have Lycantrophy already they dont need to add more types
    - Lycanthropy perk tree. Highly Doubtful would take allot of testing and I dont think Bethesda would be interested enough to invest in it
    - Vampire feeding. Same as above
    - Becoming a flying vampire lord with vampire imp minions. One of the most unlikely id say goes against the grain of the game
    - Mudcrab animation tweaks. Possible but unlikely Bethesda would have nothing to gain really from this
    - A 100 foot-tall mudcrab. Same as above however even more unlikely

As I said they are just my opinions on this

    @Apprentice Harper
It might be due to my limited English, but I don't understand what you're saying.
The video is down due to a 'copyright claim' (sure), but you seem to imply there's another source. Are you? If so, how do we get there?

I hope they won't sell these features because things like SSAO,footprints in snow, pitch black dungeons,flow-based water shaders and seasonal foliage and shedding leaves on trees are things that should've been in-game already.
