Skyrim - Day 3 and site issues

  • Comment
So we're in to day 3 of Skyrim's release and I think it's pretty safe to say that Skyrim has been a resounding success for Bethesda. A massive success.

And in spite of a lack of modding tools at this time the modding community has got off to its usual quick start with over 100 mods already in our database.

With the success of Skyrim also comes the masses of people looking for Skyrim mods, and Skyrim Nexus has already far surpassed our previous traffic record of 202,000 unique visitors in a day set by New Vegas Nexus, as yesterday's total reached 234,000 unique visitors (and 1.7 million page views). That's a massive amount of traffic and the server is currently trying to keep up with the 430 requests per second being made to it. We had a little blip this morning when a database table became corrupted causing a massive backlog of processes, but this problem has now been fixed.

Sundays are notoriously the biggest traffic days of the week for websites and with Skyrim's launch only a couple of days ago the traffic today is probably going to set a new record. Thankfully, I'm here all day to monitor the traffic and try to make the process as smooth as possible for all of you. If you do experience slowdowns, please be patient, because rest assured I'm screaming at 5 or 6 SSH terminals trying to work out what the problem is.

This weekend was always going to be extremely busy, and over the coming weeks we'll see traffic simmer down in to a more respectable and more manageable amount. Congratulations to all the modders who have managed to get their work published so far, and a big congratulations to Bethesda for their great work on Skyrim. If you don't like it there's something wrong with you.

I just signed up for the forums today, and when I go to log into skyrimnexus it tells me there is no user with this name. I'm just going to chalk it up to your server issues and try back later in the day, but I though I should at least point it out, in case someone didn't know already.

When trying to enter the Skyrim Nexis site, I get a 502 Bad Getaway error. Is that related to the issues with the site being flooded?

Oh, and we've also been under SYN Flood attack (a form of DoS attack) which the router hasn't had a problem filtering out until this influx of Skryim traffic. So yeah..it's fun..

Traffic is on par with yesterday. We're continuing to add more tweaks. I am finding that, generally, I can get 5 - 10 mins of good browsing in, the site then times out for a minute, and then returns to 5 - 10 minutes of good browsing. We believe this is because the hard connection limits in the software of the servers is being reached so, bear with us.

You're alone. I can't get 5 consecutive requests from your server without it going nuts and just failing to deliver framing information or generating a flurry storm of resends which generate a flurry storm of whois at's. You need to shut down the picture gallery and shut it down hard.

I guess the game is even more popular this morning. The Nexus skyrim site is extra painful here on a Tuesday morning (USA Central).
I had thought maybe it would tone down as compared to 'prime time'.

Here is to hoping you all can get things patched up because I'm guessing things will just get worse once the creation
engine is out and the more ambitious mods we all want start to show up.

I was amazed at how many of my steam contacts were playing Skyrim on the first day of release, around 26 of them were all playing, and at least 7 of them were chatting with me about their in-game experiences whilst we played. Definitely a very enjoyable experience!

ricksamik, Skyrim is a steam game, so the game files are in your steam folder, under program files (x86)/steam/steamapps/common/skyrim or something like that.
You can get steam to add a desktop icon, by rightclicking the game in yr list, going to properties, and a box will apear with the option to create desktop icon.
I dont think it will do it automatically during installation.

So, I went out and got the game today at Gamestop and already...the Skyrim icon on my desktop doesn't have a picture in it..its just the white icon ... anyone else have this? Where is the correct area to ask a question like this? I went to my program files/bethesda software folder where Oblivion is installed to maybe copy the icon from there..and there is no skyrim folder there. I wish I knew what was going on...this is unlike any other ES game I've ever played.
