Having Bethesda limit the characters that I could dispense my own brand of 'justice' to annoyed me. On the other hand, the only mods that I could find simply remove the Essential tag from every NPC. I don't think this is ideal, as it makes breaking quests a little too easy. So I wrote a simple script, using the new creation kit, and applied it to most of the essential NPCs.

Now, when you do enough damage to an essential character to kill them, you knock them down as in vanilla. If you then hit them with a power attack in melee, they die. Now you have a clear visual clue as to whether a character is important or not, but you are still in control.

Additionally, several NPCs are made essential by the quests they are a part of. No other mod I know of allows the player to kill even these. This includes Delphine and Jarl Balgruuf the Greater. Though I'm confused as to why anyone would want to kill him.

There were a few NPCs that I didn't apply the script to - Daedric princes and the like. If I applied it to anyone I shouldn't have, or missed someone, post a comment and hopefully I'll read it. No promises though. You should be able to add this behaviour to any NPC you like by attaching the KillEssential script to them in the creation kit.

This is my first mod, and I haven't tested it super extensively. Let me know if I've overlooked anything. Have fun!

Installation: Copy contents to Data folder, activate esp in launcher or mod manager

Uninstallation: Delete killEssentials.esp and KillEssential.pex in the Scripts folder

Known Issues: Can't get the field commanders to die. I think it's a problem with their animations, but I don't know what the problem is. Comment if you have any ideas.
