About this mod

Ever lose a perfectly good mammoth soul because your Grand Gem is filled by a Petty Soul? NEVER AGAIN.
Ever lose a perfectly good giant soul because you only have empty Common Gems? NEVER AGAIN.
This overhauls the soul capture system to make sure a soul doesn't go to waste unless you are truly out of space.

This mod has been replaced by GIST - Genuinely Intelligent Soul Trap, which is similar but more stable with more features and highly customizable.
GIST is also available on Special Edition.

This mod overhauls the soul capture system to make sure a soul doesn't go to waste until you are truly out of space.

This is a successor to 1215drew's Multi-Soul Soul Gems, which allowed new souls to accumulate inside of partially-filled soul gems. My mod also tries to prevent Soul Gems from being wasted, but without creating souls larger than the ones you actually captured.

Why? In my opinion the ability to merge small souls into a large soul was overpowered, because you could create Grand Souls from mudcrabs.

As an alternative, this mod will allow partially-filled gems to become available for a larger soul. The smaller soul will then be released and moved to an appropriately-sized gem, if one is available. If there are no gems large enough, the soul will be shrunk to fill the largest available gem.

The exact order of operations:
Spoiler:
Show
If it's a Black Soul:
  • Try the Black Star
  • Try an empty Black Soul Gem
  • Give up

If it's a Grand Soul:
  • Try an empty Grand Soul Gem
  • Try Azura's Star & the Black Star
  • Try an empty Black Soul Gem
  • Try any partially-filled Grand Soul Gems (recurse on any displaced souls)
  • Shrink the soul to Greater size, recurse on the newly-resized soul

If it's a Greater, Common, or Lesser Soul:
  • Try an empty soul gem of the correct size (first) or larger-than-correct size (in ascending order)
  • Try a partially-filled soul gem of the correct size (first) or larger-than-correct size (in ascending order of previous soul size, stopping when you reach the current soul's size)
  • Shrink the soul to the next-largest size, recurse on the newly-resized soul

If it's a Petty Soul:
  • Try an empty Petty Soul Gem (first) or a larger gem (in ascending order)
  • Give up
Known issues:
Spoiler:
Show
  • Black Soul Gems, Azura's Star, and the Black Star can't be partially filled
  • Azura's Star will be filled after any Grand Soul Gems, rather than before
  • (might be an issue, depends on your opinion) Black Soul Gems will be filled by white Grand Souls before checking for partially-filled Grand Soul Gems
These are minor paradigm issues that can't be easily solved. But overall I this is a huge improvement over vanilla and other soul-capture mods such as Acquisitive Soul Gems.

Installation:
Spoiler:
Show
  • Download the main file and any patches you need (especially the Dawnguard patch).
  • Use your favorite mod manager, or extract the files into your Data folder.
  • Enable the ESP file(s) you've installed. Patches should load after all other files.
  • BEFORE CAPTURING ANY SOULS, sell or use your filled soul gems. When you capture a soul, every Soul Gem in your inventory that was filled before installing will be reverted to the state that you found it in (whether this be empty, full, or partially-filled). If you found it empty, it will revert to empty. Souls that were filled after installing this mod will not be effected.
  • Enjoy!
