About this mod

Provides a workshop with all crafting options, safe storage, and beds near where you start the game. Provides unique gear to help you start crafting. Alters a few enchantments and spells which I thought were nerfed in the vanilla game.

This mod came about because very early in the game I thought to myself, “Gee it would be nice to have a place where I can dump all my stolen stuff so I can go pay my $27 Whiterun bounty and my $25 Markarth bounty without LOSING IT ALL.”  Then shortly after that I thought,“Gee it would be nice if the enchanting system wasn’t  nerfed so much… even after cheating my way to level 255 I can still only put “fortify alchemy” up to 40-something percent.”  So I looked at all the mods available that did things like that.  I found that all of the housing mods are simply too megalomaniac for my taste and the enchanting mods are too crazy strong for what I want.  Everybody wants to build a castle or a nine-acre ranch.  Everyone wants their enchanting spells to be godlike.  All I want is a one-room studio apartment barely big enough to fit my forge and smelter next to the bed; I don’t want to spend all day running from one side of my house to the other and I don’t want separate rooms for enchanting and smithing activities.   And a little extra beef in my enchantments.  That’s all.  Simple, but efficient – that’s what I want.  And so that is what this mod is,in my opinion.

If you stand in front of the Warrior Stone (found on the path between Helgen and Riverwood as you run from the dragon at the beginning of the game) you can look through the hole in the stone and see across the river.  You should see a building there now, that is the "Mysterious Workshop."  Be careful as you approach, for it is guarded by a bear.  When you get close, you will unlock the fast-travel icon (a minecart) on your map.  You can also use the console code "COC AAAMysteriousWorkshop" to teleport to just inside the place, but you must approach from the outside to get the icon on your map.  Upon entering, you will find that it is a workshop area with all the crafting stations (smelter, forge, tanning rack, armor table, sharpening stone, alchemy table, enchanter table, and even a cooking spit over the forge fire!) all in one room!!  You will also find several cabinets and chests that you can use to safely store your stuff.  And some beds.  It is fully nav-meshed inside and out so your followers will stay by your side as you work.  (Sorry, you cannot move your wife and kids here... it is a WORKSHOP not a daycare center.)

If you look around closely, you will also find some unique gear to help you get started with your crafting work.  They are all in the workshop, sort of hidden in plain sight.  For some of them, equip them and then look under the active magic effects menu page to see what they actually do for you.  There are also some new potions around the room that will give a good boost to your crafting abilities (temporarily of course).  Those potions cannot be made by alchemy or bought at shops, so use them wisely.  There is also a good amount of crafting clutter littering the place, ores and herbs and such, feel free to use or sell what you find.  I have also hidden an immensely powerful magical staff that tosses a ball of tri-elemental force, somewhere in the world.

I added a new enchantment to the game, which enhances your Enchanting skill.  HINT:  I give you two identical pairs of lab boots for a reason!  I also changed the effects of two potion ingredients (Thistle and Tundra Cotton) so they now work in potions to amplify your skill at:  Alchemy, Enchanting, Smithing, and Barter.  They can be easily found under the new "Fortify Alchemy" tab in the potion-making menu, they're the only two ingredients in the game that will have that effect.

I also edited several of the spells to make being a mage a bit more fun.  Now the enchantments that fortify your spells' mana costs plus the magicka regeneration rate are more useful, so wearing robes isn't such a bad idea.  I've also increased the duration and power of the protective spells Oakflesh, Ironflesh, etc. so now a fully charged Ebonyflesh spell with all the Alteration perks is equivalent to wearing a full suit of Elven Armor - but only if you are actually only wearing clothes & robes; remember these spells lose some power if you are wearing real armor, too.  I didn't go crazy with these spells, just a modest increase to help mages live longer.  But remember, enemy mages can benefit from these same effects.

I've also added a few letters addressed to various people, to make it appear as if this place has some history behind it; it sort of ties in with the Dark Brotherhood / Orphans questline... but rather than spoil all the fun I'll let you explore and see if you can find my little "easter egg" letters.  You need to explore the wastelands east of Whiterun and the workshop itself to find them all.

This mod SHOULD work with every other mod out there - including texture mods, plant/animal mods, city mods, and even lanterns of Skyrim.  I chose a remote and rarely used piece of real estate for that reason.  It will work with all the official DLC and the unofficial patches.  It only requires the vanilla Skyrim game to work though, so you can still use it even if you don't own the DLC.  You will need the official and unofficial patches though, just to be on the safe side.  SOME of the mods that change the landscape by adding extra trees and such might cause you to see something weird - like a tree growing through the roof of the workshop - from the outside.  The inside should be unaffected and it won't hurt anything really.  Comment if you like it.  Or if you find any big glitches/bugs.  Or if you find a mod that it is incompatible with.

If you want to tweak this mod, you can set it as a reference file in your editor, but please make any of your changes using your own mod file (.esp or .esm) without altering the original file.  Any changes I made to the vanilla game are obvious because the editor IDs will start with "aaaMW" for this mod, or "aaaMG" for my new greenhouse companion mod (coming soon).

I am currently working on a second part to this, which will be uploaded as a separate file.  It will add a second room to the shop which will work with the Hearthfires gardening system and it will have roughly 170 plots for you to plant your own crops.  I am going to call that "Mysterious Greenhouse" so look for it in a couple of weeks.  (COMING SOON!)  THIS MOD IS REQUIRED TO LOAD FIRST IF YOU ARE USING THE MYSTERIOUS GREENHOUSE!!
