About this mod

The Navmesh-Agnostic NPC Long-Distance Travel Helper

Requirements
Permissions and credits
Changelogs
Do you prefer not to use fast travel to follow NPCs to some far-away destination?

Are those NPCs stuck between a rock and a hard place, forcing you to continue your journey alone?

Once on the destination, does it bug you that they magically arrive there BEFORE you did?

If it's a yes to all of them, Saner Pathing is for you.

How It's Done
In a heavily modded savegame, the Travel AI can fail to work properly when points A and B are at a far enough distance from each other. While following the traveling NPC, you might find them eventually just going back and forth ad infinitum, until you give up and either (a) continue without them or (b) sod it and fast travel to the destination. I don't know the cause at the moment, but my biggest suspect would be the periodic evaluation of pathfinding AI.

So instead of navmeshes, the edits by this mod are made at the package level. NPCs are provided intermediary waypoints to eventually allow the AI to calculate a working path to the final destination with the navmesh from other mods in consideration.
Gunmar's (and radiant travel in general) situation is a little trickier, and would require different approaches.

Note: If
you decide to fast travel to the destination and not all waypoints for the NPCs are cleared, the vanilla behavior will apply (i.e. they will teleport to their respective destinations near you).

Compatibility

  • LOOT is your friend. Place higher up in the load order for compatibility, lower for integration.
  • If NPCs fail to travel in a certain area, take note if it's near a mod-added location. You might want to place it further down the load order to force the NPC to use that mod's navmesh or check if there's a navmesh conflict and a compatibility patch provided.

Bugs and Requests
  • Please feel free to report bugs and problems with the modified NPCs. It will greatly help in providing all of us non fast travelers a seamless experience.
  • I have no guarantee if I can take requests for new NPCs. Keep watch for updates. Others can fork this mod and refer to this one and provide their own fixes!
