Arvak Follower Horse
This mod allows one of your followers to summon, mount and ride Arvak the soul horse.
MOD Features:
- Choose a follower who will ride Arvak.
- The chosen follower will summon and mount Arvak immediately whenever you mount a horse.
- The follower will also dismount when you do.
- Arvak simply disappears when dismounted and can be re-summoned at any time.
- Avoids many problems with the original follower horse riding behavior.
How to use the MOD:
1. Locate Arvak's Skull and give it to your follower of choice
Arvak's Skull was a decorative but otherwise useless item. This mod changes that so that the one who is in possession of the skull receives the power to summon Arvak.
2. Mount a horse
Any horse will do. ( Except Arvak of course )
3. Watch your follower summon and mount Arvak
Your follower must be near, not swimming and not in combat. Then it shouldn't take long
4. Go for a ride with your follower
Yeeha!
5. (optional) Find a carrot and give it to your follower
This is only necessary if your follower doesn't stay on the horse. It appears the standard followers are afraid of horses. This will trick them into riding horses anyway. However there may be followers with better AI who don't need this. So this step is optional.
Compatibility:
The mod is very lightweight ( no excessive scripting, no loops or cloaks ) and clean ( no dirty edits, not even a single touched record ). So in general I expect it to be compatible with almost everything.
It works very well with original followers from the base game and it's DLCs including Serana. No problems so far. ( Be wary though I hadn't had time yet to test whether or not it breaks any of Serana's quests if she is riding on a horse. )
Custom followers should work as well I guess unless they are set up to summon their own horse or something like that.
Multi follower mods and horse mods may or may not work I don't know.
Mods changing Arvak's appearance should be compatible as long as the changes are applied to the bone horse template.
Version 2 should be compatible with the Unofficial Dawnguard Patch too. Just cast the Summon Arvak spell once to recover the deleted skull.
Troubleshooting:
- If you lost Arvak's Skull:
It can be recovered with the console ( 'prid 02002b22' and then 'moveto player' ). Try this while standing on a table and not before completing the soul cairn horse quest or it may break the quest.Cast the Summon Arvak spell once and it will return the skull to you. - If your follower summons Arvak but refuses to ride:
Give your follower a carrot to enable the follow on horse AI override. - If your follower appears not on the horse but on his back after fast traveling:
Your follower will recover quickly and summon the horse again. I traded this small inconvenience for a much bigger one that could happen upon fast travel on horseback.
