Coming from the Black Marsh city of Thorn to Skyrim, he made a name for himself as one of the best warriors of all-time. He fought so many people in the arenas throughout Tamriel that he got threatened many times and had many of his opponents that survived hire the Dark Brotherhood to assassinate him. Every time this happened he would avoid his death narrowly. He also had many of his enemies try to cheat by using extra padded armor and sharper swords to try to thwart his reputation. But he won every time. He came to Skyrim to try to defeat the legendary Dovakhiin and add even more to his name. He then realized that he could not defeat the Dovakhiin so tried to befriend him to gain his trust and some better connections to climb to the top of the chain of command to become a famous and respected general
