UPDATE:  (6/30/2015)
I recently started getting into modding, but am having a change of heart.  I don't like how much time I'm devoting to gaming and other areas of my life are suffering because of it.  I encourage other modders who like this idea and wish to see it fully realized to take my mod, make their own changes, and release their own versions.  I don't know if or when I'll be back, but for now this mod can be considered abandoned.

Buyable Maps of Skyrim is an immersion mod that allows the player to buy maps of Skyrim at various general store vendors throughout Skyrim's major cities. This is strictly for roleplaying purposes, and does not alter the map mechanics at all.  These can be found in the MISC section of various major city general store vendors (and also Riverwood).

I recognize that there are other map mods out that do virtually the same thing (and may arguably have more features).  I created this mod primarily for myself because I wasn't satisfied with their solutions.  I didn't like how the maps were equip-able "shields" or that they could be easily crafted.  Maps take a painstakingly long time to make by cartographers and the Dragonborn isn't just going to whip one up in 15 minutes at the tanning rack.  The animations that show the Dragonborn using the map as an equip-able item while in combat posture I also feel arguably break more immersion than they were intended to create.  While I appreciate the amount of work that went into those other mods, I decided to make my own mod to address these issues myself.

This map uses vanilla assets and is the same map found hanging next to Farengar in Dragonreach.  If you upgrade these map textures, the buyable map will also get a similar face lift.

Known Bugs:
Dropping this map will produce a large floating map you won't be able to pick back up.

Planned Future Updates:
1)  Make the zoomable map much larger and readable.  Make it actually a viable alternative to the in-game map.  (In Progress)
2)  Disable the in-game map mechanic completely.  (Difficult, and may not even be possible)
3)  Introduce buyable Solsteim maps from one or two vendors on Solsteim.  (In Progress)
4)  Fix the current item dropping bug.  I want this map to look like a normal in-game folded note when dropped, and I also expect the player to be able to pick it back up if dropped.  (In Progress)
5)  Make hold and city maps.  (Tentative.  Would require image editing to make the maps look decent.)
6)  Making a buyable map book that includes all holds and major cities.  I think this would be an ideal solution as a map can feasibly span two book pages and would also be able to include text and tabs.  The map would then automatically (due to book mechanics) be able to fill up the whole screen.  It would also make sense that a cartographer would be able to go through the painstaking process of setting up the printing presses, and once accomplished be able to print books in bulk.  The price of the book would sell for slightly more than a common book.  (In progress)
