Let me tell you a story, a story of how I was reborn in blood. Of how my own name is imprecise, of how I came to be raised by soldiers.

But not quite yet.

Like many other people, I had the idea of turning the character I've been replaying Skyrim with into a follower. Unfortunately, I'd also come up with a fairly in-depth, lore-friendly backstory for her, which couldn't really be expressed in a few sentences on a mod description page.

Heavily inspired by Andrew Cull's excellent Morgen mod, I added a journal. Then additional characters. Then a whole new location. Then another whole new location.

I present Ghost of the Alik'r, a mid-sized quest involving multiple NPCs, around ten kilobytes of lurid prose, two fairly large dungeons and new dialog spliced together from existing speech. It tells the tale of Sharrow, a Redguard swordswoman in search of some kind of - is it revenge? Justice? Or something more complex entirely.

It's probably full of unknown bugs, so do let me know if anything breaks too badly. Having said that, here are some known bugs:

  • New: Stormcloaks may unnecessarily attack Sharrow when you enter a camp. This may be an existing Skyrim bug, try leaving her out of sight to see if that helps. I'm looking into a much better version of this encounter which won't risk bugs like this. (Thanks mewgull) Fixed by adding a new dungeon!
  • I'm reusing as much of the existing follower stuff as possible. You can probably abandon the main character in places and not have my spaghetti scripting detect this.
  • Mods which increase the standard follower mod may cause problems. I need to investigate further.
  • If you get a message saying Sharrow should be with you when she already is, try dismissing her and getting her to follow you again.
  • Quest objectives pop up as soon as you begin reading a journal. On exit would be better. I think I found a work around for this.
  • Screenshots are mostly terrible. I was mainly working on getting this out the door!
  • Main character is rather lacking in agency. If this was real, she wouldn't need the player around at all. Although maybe she's manipulating the player into helping?

This story is no redemptive act of justice, no final vengeance - simply completion. The final, dim flicker of light in their eyes, the final empty sigh of their long-dying breaths. I am a ghost from their collective past, a cold reminder that they died decades ago.

How to start:

  • Head to the border crossing south-west of Falkreath. Alternatively, discover one of the related dungeons. I've uploaded a map to the screenshots.
  • If you dismiss Sharrow, she'll head to the Four Shields Tavern in Dragon Bridge.

Requirements:

  • Apachii Skyhair, in particular "ApachiiSkyHairFemale_v_1_5 ZIP". You don't need any other parts installed.

Very highly recommended (not required, but close):

  • Mature skin texture (warning, screenshots get a bit NSFW), for making female characters look a lot less hewn from cheese. There's an alternate face tint map in my mod for if you don't have this texture mod installed. Sharrow's meant to be aged around thirty-ish, so if she looks much younger the plot won't work at all.
  • Follower Commentary Overhaul, to make standard followers behave more like humans. Set frequency to something low like 10%.
  • High Level Enemies, to make enemies scale to higher levels. My mod should be vaguely balanced for both low-level and high-level player characters this way.
  • Immersive Armors, to give NPCs (and yourself) a much wider range of things to wear.

Thanks:

To everyone who has written tutorials on modding this game, thankyou! I've done some game dev stuff before years ago, but it impressed me how quickly I got to grips with this stuff. Additional thanks to Kulac98 for a Russian translation. Also thanks to Bethesda for making the game in the first place!
