This helps speeds up leveling the Smithing skill by allowing you to salvage most weapons and armor into ores and granting you XP to the Smithing skill.

Leveling Smithing has always been a bit of grind to me, and would often require several hours of fast traveling around cities to buy ore/ingots to craft thousands of Hide Helmets and Iron Daggers just to be able to keep up with leveling stats. Not anymore.
Simple Smithing does two very simple things.
First: using the Smelter and Tanning Rack now grant XP to the Smithing skill.
Second: You can now salvage most non-enchanted weapons and metal/heavy armors into it's base ore. Light armors can be salvaged into leather strips. Salvaging gives you 50% of the required ores/leathers back that would have been used to create the item.
In addition, since most armor/weapons will smelt into Iron Ore, the value of Iron Ore have been dramatically reduced. In addition, the value of all Iron/Steel weapons and armor have cut in half for additional balancing. The value of Leather Strips has also been reduced.
