I. DESCRIPTION
a. General
Song of Parkin-san is a quest mod for Skyrim. It adds a samurai village filled with inhabitants and their many problems.
The story is closely related to Daedric Quests of Skyrim – it unfolds as you progress at the vanilla missions. Daedric Quests aren’t altered in any way, the mod merely acknowledges their stages of completion.
That being said, it is best experienced when launched at the beginning of the game. However, it has been also designed to be accessible after a part of or even all the Daedric Quests have already been started, completed or failed.
Not all new NPCs are crucial to the main storyline but all of them have their own little stories to tell, new dialogues become available as the main mission advances. To push some stories forward other characters’ input is sometimes required. Be sure to talk to all of them every once in a while.

b. How to start
Visit the Bee and Barb Inn in Riften and look for a sad girl there.

c. What the mod adds
1. A samurai village in the Reach region of Skyrim
2. A side quest divided into four parts, prologue and epilogue
3. 14 fully voiced characters (plus one mute, as in handicapped, NPC)
4. Over 2500 of dialogue lines
5. a few new books
6. 7-8 hours of the new content game time (half of which is the main story) plus any Skyrim Daedric Quests which haven’t been completed
7. 14 new weapons including katanas, dai-katanas and tantos all created by InsanitySorrow
8. Sweet video ending

d. More information
This mod:
  • is intended as a part mystery part comedy experience, and although the story aims at not being too serious it may explore darker themes at times.
  • is for people who look for story-centered new content for Skyrim, it involves a lot of talking and reading
  • contains some characters who you wouldn’t call the most polite people in the world, however it is purely for the sake of comedic relief. I do not try to insult anyone or hurt anybody’s feelings, just to provide you with some entertainment. It’s not vulgar per se but in case you’re easily offended - you’ve been warned.
  • deals with a problem of alcohol dependence, not more however than Skyrim game itself, so if you own Skyrim I guess you are mature enough to deal with such matters; besides: occasional violence, duh.
This mod is NOT:
  • fully lore friendly (it contains a samurai class for one; it also pictures some of the Elder Scrolls Universe lore in a slightly different light, makes use of our current pop culture for the sake of comedic relief)
  • an exact representation of samurai culture or any kind of hardcore Japan-themed modification
  • for those who look for new gameplay mechanics, it doesn’t add much more than a new place, story and characters
Since the mod is story-centered I decided to make my NPCs unkillable, all of them are referred to by other characters at some point. It would be too much time consuming for me to alter existing and create new dialogues and scripts.
I decided to perform all the male voices myself. I tried to make each one of the characters sound distinctive and unique but I’m aware of my limitations, especially my foreign accent I can’t overcome. Anyway, I hope it’s understandable, playable and not too irritating.

e. What the mod lacks.
In other words: things to do, maybe I will add them one day with others’ help, no promises)
  • no friend/ally/faction protection (experimented with factions, AI, but I’m apparently too stupid and lazy to get it to work)
  • more interaction between NPCs
However, do not ask me to implement anything specific, no time simply put.

II. REQUIREMENTS
The latest version of Skyrim
No other mods or DLCs required

III. INSTALLATION
Nexus or other mod manager recommended
Manual:
1. Unpack everything to the Data folder in your Skyrim directory.
2. Check the mod in the game launcher.

UNINSTALLATION
Save your game outside any areas added by Song of Parkin-san.esp
Nexus or other mod manager recommended
Manual:
Delete the contents of the mod from Data folder in your Skyrim directory

IV. COMPATIBILITY
The mod will NOT be compatible with
  • any mod that changes the area where my samurai village is located (mountains halfway between Karthwasten and Stormcloak Camp in the Reach) or the (uninhabited, far away) area northeast of Winterhold
  • any mod that alters Riften Bee and Barb Inn. However, a new NPC is there only at the beginning of the story (it is also essential to begin it). So, just for the prologue, moving Song of Parkin-san.esp to the end of the load order in your mod manager should resolve any issues. (Alternatives - see the Readme file.)
The mod is compatible with
  • InsanitySorrow’s mods. I used his meshes and textures but modified the IDs and implemented new versions of his weapons in my mod.
    IMPORTANT
Aforementioned areas are the only ones altered by the mod, the rest is newly added content. Thus, I believe it shouldn’t be incompatible with anything else.
I cleaned it with TES5Edit and tested it with a lot of more popular mods out there and haven't experienced any issues (apart from those which I mention in KNOWN ISSUES section below). That being said, I feel obliged to mention you download and install my mod at your own risk. Make a copy of your save game, as you should always do when you apply a new mod. I hope it functions properly, I myself play Skyrim with it installed, but I cannot ever be 100% sure it will not mess with your save game. In any case, I won't be held responsible if it breaks your game in any way.
This is my first mod for Skyrim and it’s somewhat more ambitious than I initially anticipated. I may have used some shortcuts I am not aware of.

V. KNOWN ISSUES
1. Pond problem
Walking near the village pond at a certain angle makes the area look as if it were underwater. It happens only at one location, where you are below the water surface level but still next to the pond. It can be a little immersion-breaking but I don’t know how to fix that.
2. Voiceover quality
You will probably notice some differences in quality and volume among my audio files, that's because I acquired a better mic in the middle of the project, hope it’s not too annoying. I decided it would be just too much work doing it all over again.
3. Linguistic errors
Last but not least - possible spelling and grammar mistakes, incorrect pronunciation. So sorry for those. I put a lot of effort to eliminate as much as I could of those annoying little buggers but, as I mentioned before, I’m not a native English and it can be a little hard for me to catch them all, as it were. Hope they’re in forgivable numbers at least. Note, however, Ichisua’s and Ikisua’s mistakes are intentional.

VI. PERFORMANCE

    • If you experience low frame rate, stutter or CTD in the village, you might try disabling any high-res textures you're running
    • Or try ENBoost
    • It is always a good idea to get the hang of BOSS and Wrye Bash

    VII. FAQ
Q: Why can't I get Mephala Daedric Quest to start?
A1: Prerequisite – Dragon Rising (main quest)
A2: If Hulda and Mikael (at the Bannered Mare Inn in Whiterun) are both dead type into console: setstage da08 10

Q: There used to be an alchemy skill book where the village is now. Is it gone?
A: Search Ho's bookshelves for it.
