I happened across the Dwemer ruins where the first part of Lost to the Ages begins and came across Katria. I was astonished about how intelligent her AI package was. She used cover and popped out only to shoot.
This little ESP gives Lydia the same behavior. With a new game, she should spawn with an Imperial bow and 25 steel arrows. If in the middle of a save game you may have to give her some archery equipment.
