Beards is a Skyrim texture mod that replace the existing beards with high resolution hand painted beards that are true to the vanilla style, but look so much more photo realistic. Beards also feature added beard styles that were present in the Skyrim files, but not enabled in game.

I always intended to eventually retexture Skyrim's awfully low-res blurry beard textures. In fact, I've stated at several accounts that I would at one point improve the various character generation facial textures such as; beards, eyebrows, hair, complexion and tint masks. So one day while secretly plotting and working on other top secret projects with Aesir and Omesean, I managed to get Omesean to enable some previously disabled beards in the CK as I were too lazy/incompetent to do it myself at the given time – so thanks to him for doing this in a mere 5 minutes. I thought this was a good time as any, once he did, to start retexturing the beards. So I did.

Please be aware that Beards is first and foremost a retexture mod – the braided added beards are just an added bonus and you're in no way obligated to use them if you don't want to. I am already aware the models look horrible, so please don't bother me about it – I didn't make them and I don't (at this given moment) have the ability to fix or improve the models myself. Retexturing them makes some of them fairly usable, but never in a hundred years will a retexture make them look awesome. Bad mesh is bad. I am also fairly certain the reason these braided beard styles weren't available for player characters is because they never turned out as intended by Bethesda – not sure WHY they couldn't fix them, but they probably had a tight release schedule and suddenly they just didn't have the time to do so.

The vanilla beard textures were only an extremely low 256².
I retextured those beard textures at a stunning 2048² and I see no reason to go any higher than that.
I have 2k textures available for high-end rigs. The visual differences from the 1k textures are so small though, that it is not recommended to use these.
I have 1k textures available for any rig. You can barely see a difference from the 2k textures, highly recommended to use these.

It is recommended to install Beards with Nexus Mod Manager, it simplifies the process greatly and also makes it simple to uninstall again if needed.

To manually install Beards, use either WinRar or 7-Zip to extract the files to: Steam/steamapps/common/skyrim
If asked to override, click yes. Please keep in mind this will override any other beard (re)textures you currently have installed.

To manually uninstall Beards, delete the beards folder inside the textures folder found here: Steam/Steamapps/Common/Skyrim/Data/Textures/Actors/Character/Beards
Please keep in mind this will delete any other beard (re)textures you currently have installed. If you know what you're doing you can enter the beard folder and delete each texture manually as you see fit.

Conflicts:
The current version of Ethereal Elven Overhaul conflicts with Beards and apparently nuska - the author of Ethereal Elven Overhaul has no intention of fixing the problem any time soon here quoting:

I'm aware of that one beard mesh freaking out and I haven't been able to figure out why. Even redoing the elf morphing makes it turn out weird. And as it's just one beard I've marked it up as a low priority issue from well before release - so in all honesty it likely won't be fixed in a while to come.

I scrapped and redid the alterations and the bug was still there. Only a small fraction of EEO users seem to play male elves so they've been on a bit of a backburner. I also ran into a lot of stuff blocking me from doing as much as I wanted with them.

It is important to note though, that this problem is not ONLY with male elves but ALL bearded characters that use that particular mesh. It may not be important to nuska, but this affects all of Skyrim, not just elves.

A temporal fix is to go to meshes/actors/character/character assets/ in your data folder and delete the beards folder completely. Be aware though that nuska edited the Beard mesh for a reason, so you would on the other hand have the issue with elf races again. I recommend doing this based on what race you pay the most. If you want to fix the problem entirely, you may have to uninstall EEO (I would have said either mod, but the problem persist even without Beards installed). But that is entirely up to you to decide.
