The books are a part of my introduction to high fantasy. It was also the very first time I got to read something like a dark-themed fantasy story. The character is exceptional and some of the adventures are of the highest epicness, so if you ever come across his tale, don't miss out on reading it...
He's indeed legendary and the stories of his fate follows me still today since I consider him being one of the best characters ever made. The whole anti-hero theme works so well with him and the struggles of his life...
Truly thank you!
He's probably one of the most cynical heroes in fantasy and he gets his strength from a pact made with a demon lord living inside his cruel runesword...
Brilliant images, Rick, and yes, you have him perfectly from that cover pic!
Great work!
I'm very happy to hear you know about this character, my friend, because this is the one that brought me into the worlds of dark fantasy. His realm is also one of high fantasy with lots of epicness as Law and Chaos confront each other for an eternity. He pretty much inspired me down the darker roads when it comes to writing and he's the antihero I love...
I'm very pleased with the look of him as well, so it's good to hear you find his appearance fitting the last emperor of Melniboné...
Truly thank you for your kind words, my dear Les!
He's a fiction character for us older people!
I also wanted to tell you, I'm aware you've released quite a lot of sets I haven't commented yet, simply because I'm drowning in notifications at the moment. I do have them all in my notification list though, so I will get there...
Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser has stuck with me forever it seems. It is why I tend to model many game play throughs (where you have multiple characters) with a big body guard and a little guy. I tend to play the smaller rogue/mage and like my companion to be the big warrior type. Grim was a bit of a role reversal in that he became more the Fafhrd.
But I have read thousands of books and gotten impressions from many (avid reader since I could pick up a book) fantasy authors but still the classic team-up of the mighty Northern Barbarian warrior (usually with the big heart) and the more grim and smaller rogue/mage character sticks with me.
Elric I loved mainly because of the high fantasy - the over the top magic and sense of power behind him and his history. Also because he was simply a unique and intense character.
The image of him I remember strongest is from one of the book covers:
Great set and your creation of him I think captures the heart of who he is very well.
PS - Funny you did this post as I recently started re-reading some of my childhood classics. I was overjoyed when one of my favorite trilogies, The Riddle-Master trilogy--The Riddle-Master of Hed, Heir of Sea and Fire, and Harpist in the Wind, by Patricia A. McKillip, which has been out of print, has been reprinted in a single anthology of all three. Had just ordered it and have decided to get the Elric books again as well. Plus another classic by MM: The Swords Trilogy: The Knight of the Swords / The Queen of the Swords / The King of the Swords (also out of print but luckily can get used online). Hmm maybe I will pick up Fafhrd as well and just enjoy a winter reading many classics (Edit: I did order the first set of those).
I'm very glad you know about Elric and that he's also a character of your liking. Elric is indeed the very antihero of his world (or many worlds thanks to Moorcock's Multiverse) and the stories about his fate are exploding with epicness and high fantasy for true.
I'm deeply into dark-themed fantasy even if I read just about anything when it comes to this kind of fantasy, science fiction or postapocalyptic themes. It all started with the Elric saga, since it was like nothing I had ever read before. Much of my own writing ends rather sadly - not because I want it, but more because sadness, lonliness and misery are feelings I'm more familiar with. I guess we all take roots in our experiences and much of what I write is turned dark because of my life. I know it's not something most people want, and like I said, I enjoy a good positive end or stories with warmth and humor to them too. But the darker themes will always have a special place within me I guess.
Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser are not dark fantasy - you're absolutely right there. I do place them in the same category as Elric though, since their stories belong to the Sword and Sorcery-genre, just like Conan, Red Sonja, Gord the Rogue, etc. This all lead me into the world of tabletop roleplaying (a Swedish version very similar to D&) and later on also video games. My very first PC game I bought was Baldur´s Gate and since then I'm stuck with mostly RPG's (and I got introduced to the D& universe thanks to BG)...
I glad there are still people buying printed books, even the rare and older ones, as well as re-reading old childhood classics, it makes me smile. I've always had a very fond connection to books. Some stories are of course out of print, so it's equally good there's possibilities to read the tales online. Good to hear you decided to go ahead with the order of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser as well, especially since they indeed seem to have a bit of importance to your personal inspiration!
I tried to find his style thanks to all the wonderful artwork on the "net", and I also wanted to find an armor that didn't make him too bulky or muscular, since he's rather slender in the novels. My choice is a mashup between the Rough Leather Armor from Divine Elegance Store and the gloves and boots from Evil Mastermind Armor.
At the first sight I thought... man he did Thor from the Marvel universe... the guy wants to know it, he? ... so please don't be upset when I (because of my knowledge lack) take this char as my personal Thor... which I really like
I'm not sure I would've known about him either unless fate had it that day at the library when my steps and eyes were guided to the shelf of the author Michael Moorcock. I'm really glad it went down like that though, because he's my most beloved male fictional character since then...
He does look a bit like Thor from the Marvel Universe, especially the version from the comic books. The movie version is more powerful looking thanks to great actor Chris Hemsworth where as Elric is more skinny and slender. They both depend on - and get their strength from - their magical weapons though, so there's similarities actually...
Thanks a lot, my dear!
Gorgeous contribution to the theme.
Maybe one day I will have an idea for this theme
He belongs at the top of famous fantasy characters, but I guess you must've read a lot of high fantasy novels from from the 60´s, 70´s or the 80´s to recognise him. His saga was the very first introduction to true dark fantasy to me though and Elric of Melniboné is still today my favorite male fictive character...
I'm quite convinced you'd be able to make a fantastic SNC-set, since you put so much love and effort into your characters, so I'm eagerly waiting for your first choice...
I also read his story, so know about his life and adventures.
I think you captured that grim looking expression very well,....
It seems it's mostly people around 40+ (such as ourselves) that knows of him, but that's understandable. The stories of him was started in the 60´s and the 70´s and I discovered him in the late 80´s here in Sweden, so unless you're really into oldschool Sword and Sorcery-fantasy, his saga might be missed. Good to hear you've read about him though, because it makes this homage of mine more meaningful.
Thank you ever so much!
