About this image

After a little time here Richard began to revise his opinion. The township was still small, and boring, their main concerns seeming to be the dearth of Pilgrims headed up he seven thousand steps. One Khajiit pilgrim was particularly annoying with his attempt to count the steps and not coming up to an even seven thousand. And he'd been incensed by the suggestion that seven thousand was just a poetic number rather than an accurate accounting.

Too much moon sugar he thought...

Still... if the town was boringly mundane, the setting was not. The beautiful birches and aspens that predominated in the Rift, the looming majesty of High Hrothgar, the rushing river behind the town with its leaping salmon and deer on the opposite bank.

He had to go see what those enigmatic monks wanted from him, then he'd see what lay at the bottom of that barrow. Perhaps another of those peculiar word walls. Of course there would be Draugr. Technically he'd already been paid, but his curiosity was roused. Part of him wished he could leave it at that... but for some reason he was constitutionally unable to let a puzzle go unsolved.

A dangerous trait overall he mused.

He went over to Lydia sitting at the bar. She'd had enough ale that she was a little flushed. She wasn't drunk by a long stretch, yet neither was she totally sober.

"I'm for bed," he told her."Long damn climb tomorrow."

"Sounds like a good idea, My Thane. I'll go get my bedroll."

"Still irritated that I only rented half a room. But there's no need, we'll both fit on the one."

Lydia smiled at him, her green eyes merry. "Are you sure My Thane? Neither of us is exhausted and to sleep spooned like that. Well, we both know there's every chance that we'll wind up entertaining anyone awake at the time. And we'll probably wake Linley."

"You've a point Lydia. But I'd rather not have you sleeping at my feet if I can avoid it."

Besides, she was warm and pleasant to cuddle up to. And once she'd warmed to the idea, a damn fine bed-mate. Both willing and often demanding.
