Magical image, Rick, but by all the Gods what a fantastic song....I see shield walls and Draakenschiff (sorry about the spelling) but do I also see images of Odin and Fenrir, or is that the wrong series of sagas?
You've really got my imagination into overdrive.....how do we get Beowulf and the Ragnarok into Skyrim and where can we find Bifrost?
There MUST be some Viking blood in me somewhere because that song just makes me want to go out and beat the hell out of some Columnban monks!
I love it when either images, music or writing of my choice can evoke something within the beholder (or listener). Others creativity can be such a spark for your own imagination and lust for adventure and grand tales. I really love your enthusiasm, Les! It really means a lot and I know the feeling very well. Sometimes you just hear, read or see something that's a true calling...
I'd also say much of the Viking lore and old Norse mythology is already in the game. The whole Sovngarde could well as been Valhalla - or greatly inspired of it. Heck, even the Nords themselves are old pagan Scandinavians and that's probably why I feel so home in this world.
I'm thrilled you loved the song, Les! It's a very beautiful one and it's so nice to hear you like it so much even if she sings in Swedish.
Oh, and I'll add you to my mailing list for our next Viking raid party!
In fact I think that listening to the song in it's native language is perfect as all the nuances of emotion and history are based in that language and are reflected in the way the song is sung...and the singer has such a beautiful voice too.
I'm going to see if I can use some more of the Norse songs as replacements for the default Skyrim music as I know that they will enhance the sense of immersion and lore, for me at least!.
Oh, and yes please put me down for any raids on the island of the Anglo-Saxons, although please understand that at my age I can only keep up with the pillaging....anything else leaves me out of breath!
I absolutely agree on songs sung with their native language! It's great and very mind-opening, since the emotional value sometimes is easier to reach with just the voice and the music...
And don't you worry about the raids! Age is nothing when it comes to inspiration and a true calling...or I'll just have you in charge of the mead kegs!
I really love this tune myself as well. I often listen to it when writing stories with a pagan touch, stories about creatures of the wild getting in contact with the realm of humans. It's a lovely atmospheric song, almost like a saga being told...
That's a good thing! I actually thought about the cover by In Extremo, but I figured the Swedish original had a bit more Nordic feeling about it, a bit more fairy-tale...and of course, being Swedish myself I adore the lyrics here even if they're a bit off from the image. There should be a troll king and a human princess in there...
