Okay I know the Altmer and the Imperial are the same height. Truth is I was kind of sick of Bethesda's Imperial heights, so I decided to tweak there height some. They came out the same height as the Altmer as you see in this group shot. Tweaked there heights and the Altmers are taller by and inch and the Imperials are taller then the Nords. The Altmer females are shorter then the Imperial males while the Imperial females are shorter then the Altmer female. So in my book the Imperials are the better humans and the Altmer are the better elves.
See in my opinion the reason I thank its called the Great War. You got two surperior races (Imperial and Altmer) both are deciding the fate of Tamrial in there on brutal way, but ones views are more brutal then the other and the rest of Tamrial is stuck in the middle of there conflict. this is my theory and opinion of course.
Have a nice day. :)

On the other hand from a cultural, intellectual, and civilized viewpoint I can agree that the Imperials are the better race - being more advanced than their barbaric counter parts in the north. Where they live is less harsh then the environment of the Nords and thus they have had more time to advance in magic, science, and other forms of civilization - as they are not struggling just to survive every day. This tends to give them an intellectual advantage over the Nords. Although the Bretons are superior in magic and the Redguard ... not sure where they fall into the mix.
Likewise I think for the Altmer - the High Elves are probably the most culturally advanced of all the mer races and hence the superior when judged against that qualification. So I can see the Imperials versus Altmer idea here. But physically I would say the Dunmer are probably superior to the Altmer.
I think it's called the Great War simply because it was a large-scale war. Both sides had huge resources at their disposal and suffered fairly big losses.
On the Stormcloak point, keep in mind that there's only a civil war because the Empire is forcing the Nords to abandon their culture. Independent by nature, they of course see that as unacceptable. Ulfric is not even a great leader (he's pretty terrible), he just has a following because many Nords feel threatened by all the chaos brought into their land by the Thalmor. That then leads them to see the Imperials as nothing more than puppets. In a way, they're right; the Empire is too weak to stand up to the Aldmeri Dominion.
Bottom line, the Nords feel as though they have already done their part during the Great War. The Aldmeri Dominion is just trying to weaken the bond between Skyrim and the Empire because they know that the Nords make strong allies and are likely the biggest threat to their expansion.
The true enemies are the Thalmor who are pushing the Civil War as it plays right into the hands.
The problem is that the Imperials are in a bind with that deal ... a deal that should have never been made and one that came at great cost to Skyrim and the Nords.
