About this image
New silver-plated sword in the Secret Of The Silver Blades collection.
The Kopis is a forward-curved machete-like short sword used by the ancient Greeks, especially on horseback. (In fact, THIS is the curved sword that Xenophon recommends for use by cavalry, not a sabre.) Probably of Etruscan origin, so between that and the use by Greeks, it seemed like a natural addition to a game themed around the Roman Empire.
It may well be the direct ancestor of both the Iberian Falcata and the Turkish Yatagan, although it is probably unrelated to the similar-looking Nepalese Kukri.
It's unrelated to the Egyptian Khopesh, even etymologically, although they sound alike. The name comes simply from the verb "to cut". So basically it means "cutter" or "chopper".
