One of your best my friend! On to the next chapter!
I pretty much cover the answers to these in the next chapter and don't want to spoil anything for any stragglers that may come along so I will just say thanks very much for reading through my latest epic-long chapters and very happy you enjoyed them!
She's showing even more of her true face than usual now, it seems. Now will Avrein break down and show his?
Nicely done, both pics and story! Being so painful for Grim, it must've been a bit for you, too.
Now on to the next... I have to see how they get out of this.
I suppose from her perspective there is much to be angry about ... but then it was not Grim who asked to be kidnapped and tortured by Father and Daughter. The Thalmor pretty much brought this on themselves. I have about as much sympathy for them, and her, as I do a vampire complaining because the cattle they feed on tried to put a stake through their heart. Of course she does not see it that way but then good/evil is often relative to the entity viewing it ... at least in a world of fantasy where you have non-human intelligence.
You are in also in luck as you are catching most of these after I have already posted them so I don't think you have to worry about any cliff hangers!
The introduction of Domina to the mix was awesome. That shot of her with her face all lit up, along with words like ‘slinking’, made me shiver. And right on the back of Av’s thoughts about Grim having become his ‘friend’.
Domina’s overpowering of Tolfdir and Grim was not surprising considering all that she is willing to do and give for power. Like Darth Vader, I wonder how much ‘humanity’ is left within her and how much power simply exists in the shell she calls her body. And just WHO is it that’s augmented her power? The same person blocking Hircine’s connection? Must be powerful to be able to do that. A Daedra? Would Domina pal around with a Daedra? Hmmm.
It was shocking to read of her torture of Grim – even more so because as she was hurting him I could almost feel those he cared about (and in turn care about him) felt each blow; Wolfgar, Kynareth, Hircine, Erik (to some extent) and of course Av who must sit there and helplessly watch, wearing the traitor’s mask… for I DO NOT believe he is!! He’s just biding his time until he gets the right opening to strike… hopefully. For surely he must be what the trickster wolf has hidden up his sleeve. His ace in the hole…
A very torturous chapter and I feel for you having to write it. This must’ve been a hard one for you. Bring on the next please!
Glad you liked Domina's entrance. She is a prima dona so I had to make sure it was very grand and over the top. Since Avrein told her that Grim is "very" weak to fire magic she decided to enter with the potent flame atronachs ... giant ones of course. She may be in for a little surprise there later ... who knows.
The friendship thing with Avrein was a little heavy handed but this style is more like a play - where everything tends to be very direct for the most part. While Grim has only known Avrein for a month a lot of friendships (or love affairs) start off very quickly and with a lot of emotion. This is even more true back in the old days before all the other forms of communication came along. You often lived or died based on your friends. So fighting together and being welcomed at the college really made an impact on Grim. Plus he tends to be a spontaneous type of person and speaks his mind.
Remember that the Kalanar blood-line made a pact with a Daedric Prince way, way back in time. That gift always gets displayed by black hair. The gift can be a little random but overall it tends to focus on intellect, knowledge, and magical skills. The curse seems to involve isolation (lack of warm emotions and often emotions in general) and self-involvement to the point of narcissism.
As for your keen insight on Avrein ... well everyone will know very soon as I finished all the shots for part 3 last night and I am busy working away on the text. Barring any issues I hope to have it done tonight.
Lastly it was horrible to write. I absolutely hate doing bad things to characters ... they may be fictional but they still exist in my head (and others who read my stories) and it is always very painful. Hopefully some of the good things I do for them helps to balance it all at.
All I will say is that Part 3 will be online soon - hopefully later tonight. So you may want to hold off on any more comments until you read part 3 ... and then you can let it rip!
And then the arrival of Domina. It seemed to me that she was really pleased with herself. Everything went as she wanted. Or so she thinks ..... And when she started to torture Grim. So much hatred in one person. Is it even possible? Even her brother certainly did not expect this.
I really hope that Fenrir´s plan will work.
I look forward to the next chapter. Thank you very much for sharing your wonderful work!
If you felt sorry for Avrein then I achieved my goal of making him what I call a "sympathetic enemy" as the point was to show that even an "enemy" can sometimes be someone you like but find yourself on opposite sides of the fence due to circumstances. It is a very painful situation.
Domina was very pleased with herself, but then why not? She out-maneuvered the entire Thalmor Inner-Circle (and organization as a whole) and got their unified support (even if Elenwen and Ondolemer are primary given "face" support only). She hid the knowledge of the eye, fooled her brother into not only helping her achieve her goals but also believes she has completely won back his loyalty ... although she trusts no one completely.
Working on part 3 today so hopefully three will be some resolutions coming soon!
Exceptional work my friend!
So glad you enjoyed the stories and thank you very much for reading them!
I see that as ever Domina is one to keep many secrets to herself, not even speaking them to her own brother, she really is one to only trust herself in making sure her plans succeed. So cruel she was with that laughter as she caught Grim in that spell, her words spoken as if addressing some monster which is all she sees in him, a vision conjured out of her hatred. Looks like Avrein did not truly know his sister, seeing such evil in her, or perhaps he did not want to see that in her, holding some hope that she did things for a reason but now he cannot deny that she is simply cruel for her amusement. Such a chaos of emotions and thoughts he is holding back as he watches.
I like how you showed those glimpses of those trying desperately to help Grim, Kynareth watching from above with tears of rage in her eyes, the prince of hunters trying to reach but to no avail even with the power he wields, Erik watching over Wolfgar in his precarious state waiting out a night that seems and eternity, that hint of hope of a spell that was a long shot, left by Fenrir before entering that deep sleep. Some really great emotion and tension you have created in this chapter, really makes one feel them.
When writing it is not always easy to keep up the front of consciousness all the little things about your characters - small example is that Grim has the dragon souls in his mind he talks to, he is overly-protective of those he cares for, he is shy and quiet around strangers (unless he is flirting/persuading/intimidating for work), etc. But I try to keep some of it in mind and hence why he took that stance with Avrein. If I ever write an actual book I plan on keeping copious notes, detailed personality lists, etc for all characters. Anyhow point being I am glad you picked up on that.
Avrein is going through a rough time and Grim isn't aware of any of it - to him he is just a friend who turned out to be a Thalmor in disguise. His heart is filled with rage and hurt right now, along with that special anger that comes from embarrassment at being gullible and deceived. Avrein has a pretty good idea now of just what Domina is really like and he is not happy about it. I suppose Avrein got a dose of his own medicine in Domina deceiving him ... course Domina has been doing it for decades and keeping her brother loyal ... although cold as she is there is some affection in there for her half-brother beneath all the fanaticism.
A pretty dark chapter I know. Okay very dark (at least to me) but lets hope Fenrir's little "hope" works out!
