What would be better I wonder? Living with your sweetheart in some condo in real life while working the 9-5 drudge at some computer or retail ... or working dusk to dawn at the wood mill or hunting out in the woods or perhaps a priest at the temple of Mara? Skyrim offers a lot of pluses but also plenty of negatives ...
Sorry somewhat off-topic. Perhaps it is the "grass is greener" syndrome that I romanticize life in Skyrim with Erik and Grim and Wolfgar so much
You seem to be describing my condo life Jonathan. I was raised in the country and I miss it so much at times. Probably why I love playing Skyrim so much. It's not even close to my real Canadian country side (the smells and sounds, the breeze) but it's close enough after a day at the office.
And Roger, just think about how hard you've worked for everything you've got and stuff. That's pretty neat, I'm sure I'd miss the country sides if I ever lived in them too though.
Priests in Skyrim have some big advantages. They are pretty much disease free since they serve the Aedra (some may dispute this but every temple has an altar to the divine which can cure disease and other problems - who sanctifies these altars? The priests of course). The thing is that people who die from disease tend to be those who can't find a priest or sanctified altar in time.
Also magic. I think people get stuck on the mindset that the only magic that exists is our limited "game" spell book. Hardly. A leading cause of death in the old days was mainly disease and poor dentistry. Both of which could be easily remedied between magic and holy blessings. I read an interesting book that talked about how often more deaths in military groups came from poor hygiene and diet. A fantasy novel (the Black Company) had their wizards cast teeth and gum protection on all their members every year.
In the world of Skyrim it is very possible for people to have clean teeth and pretty good health. Magic (divine and arcane) is actually fairly prevalent in the world - it isn't scare and limited to a handful of wizards like in Lord of the Rings.
In the end being a priest in Skyrim could have many benefits. Now the downside is also steep. Fighting undead, vampires, werewolves, dragons, frost spiders, bandits, even mages, necromancers, the Daedra, etc, ... much evil in Skyrim and evil that is both visible and tangible as well as the more subtle evil that lies in the hearts of sentient beings.
