Valorin was actually around in the Oblivion crisis but he never seemed to realise that his personality does tend to get people worked up... He's more interested in pursuing Arcane knowledge than working on his people skills. Although he was left for dead Valorin is more interested in checking that no one stole any pages from his research than realising he's going to probably freeze to death. One day he may learn but it is doubtful.
