About this image

Avos Athren (a Dunmer barbarian) is another old character I've decided to restart. I may post some random shots of him later.

-- Background --

Avos's father was a Redoran-aligned trader who'd gained the favor of a band of Urshilaku Ashlanders, while his mother was an Urshilaku from that band. They married sometime in the 4E 140s and settled in a Redoran village in mainland Morrowind.

Born around 4E 150, Avos grew up mainly in his parents' village, with occasional trips with his father and brother to trade, or to visit relatives in Blacklight. He also spent enough of his youth with his mother's band to be a properly-initiated Urshilaku, and he still has a cloak in their traditional banner design. He has been a wanderer for most of his life, living at various times as a trader, warrior, and sellsword, with the occasional stints with the Urshilaku or on his own in the wilderness.

Most recently (summer 4E 201), Avos has been living in Windhelm, renting a room in the Grey Quarter and making a living through published bounties, odd jobs, hunting, and the occasional arena fight. Windhelm hasn't exactly lived up to his expectations, to put it mildly, and he probably wouldn't have stayed very long if he hadn't met Kjorik the Curious. The two of them quickly became friends, and they have hunted animals and bandits together many times throughout the summer.

Like most Dunmer, Avos follows the post-Tribunal faith of the New Temple, though he admits he's not very devout, and he tends to prefer Azura to Mephala and Boethiah. He's learned more about the Divines in recent months (thanks in part to Kjorik), and he often wears an Amulet of Kynareth that Kjorik gave him. He and Kjorik both support Brunwulf Free-Winter's outreach attempts, and (not surprisingly) neither of them are particularly fond of Ulfric Stormcloak.

Avos is of normal Dunmer height and rather muscular by elven standards.* He wears his hair long and loose and his beard long and knotted. Years spent in the warmer parts of Morrowind have given him a taste for minimal clothing and armor. Physically he's almost exclusively attracted to other males, and though he's had a fair number of friends of both genders, he has yet to find long-term love. Always a bit of a loner, he has been known to spend up to several weeks at a time alone in the wilderness without seeing another person. Never very interested in magic, he knows only a few low-level flame and healing spells. A barbarian in combat, he prefers two-handed swords and light armor.

Trivia: Avos's great-grandfather Virvyn Athren claimed to have met the Nerevarine several times during the last years of the Third Era and the first years of the Fourth.

* Height 1.00, weight 60 in character creation.

Thanks, aok! I'm not sure what my plans for them are yet. On one hand, Andil's installments are already taking longer than I expected. On the other hand, these guys might be a good diversion when I'm not in the mood for Andil, assuming I don't get to another character first.

Good background - never played before TESV, so it's nice to read a story that contains some lore (e.g. morrowind and the era timeline).

      Thanks, Maplevolt!

I started with Skyrim, too, around the end of October 2012, though I did buy Morrowind and Oblivion during a Steam sale the following January. I haven't played either of those anywhere near as much, though.
