I´m not using a follower mod like UFO or Amazing follower thing...mod..you know what I mean. Somehow my game can´t manage Lydia. She´s vanilla, no changes at all. I think that she´s using a bow could have something to do with SkyRe, have no explanation why. Uth..Uther..however that tall woman from the tavern is called is using a bow too when I use the crossbow in stealth.
Why arent you using UFO? i would say it is highly recommended, even if you dont want more followers than one after you then it has more options like you can choose what your follower can carry from your inventory, change her/his weapons or armours as you wish etc etc.. make them essentian so they wont die and never respawn... ever since i installed UFO (after a few moments of thinking i installed it wrong but followed the instruction thoroughly) i can never, i mean NEVER play without it again cause its a MUST - but all in all, if you dont want to use it, then its your choice
