    Made the quote up myself,
every time i make a picture for a legendary soul that has no texts or lines in the elder scrolls i try putting myself into that characters shoes,
as for Kagrenac, I figured he knew the spell for the nemunium would be a failure, thus creating a backup plan, so that when he would activate the nemunium (and the failing spell would trigger a huge explosion) he would use his tools in combination with the heard of lorkan to transport himself and every other dwemer to Atherious, where they could do there research in piece without being bothered by the other races as they would pursuit the knowledge of the ancients and power of the infinite.

    Wiki:

Kagrenac was High Priest and Magecrafter of the Dwemer. He built items known collectively as Kagrenac's Tools or the Profane Tools - three artifacts integral to accessing the divine power of the Heart of Lorkhan: Keening, Sunder, and Wraithguard.

Kagrenac was given the responsibility of using this heart to create the Numidium. However, his spell failed, and the Dwarves (as the Dwemer are sometimes known) disappeared, during the events of the War of the First Council. These events took place sometime between 1E 668 and 1E 700.
