He used a cool, simple trick for applying visual heat shimmer once you got close enough: he simply sped up the 'waves' of the lava, and made their height really small, so it would realistically 'shimmer' from the 'heat'! Colour will tell temperature. Your lava looks quite cool (temperature-wise) because it's so red. At that colour-temperature, it's gonna be thick and 'toothpaste'-like, so maybe you might add a bit of yellow for a higher temp. ">
That aside however, right now your texture looks wickedly lethal if your character (or mine) was to stupidly step into it. ">
