Skyrim

Required:
RaceMenu or ECE
NifMerge

Note: This method likely won't work for the longer hairstyles from KS Hairdos. You'll have to have some knowledge of the CK and take a more conventional route (the very last bullet point at the bottom of the guide is a general outline on how to do so!).

1. Open up Skyrim and enter the race menu. In the race menu, change the hair and hair color to whatever you desire. Then export the head.

2. Find the Base ID of the child you wish to edit. You can look it up on elderscrolls.wikia.com, or in-game by opening up the console (`) and typing in help character'sname. Ex. help aventus, will show that his ID is 00014132. What matters is the last 5 digits.

3. Exit the game.

4. Open up NifMerge.

  •      If you're having trouble dragging files into it, then open it up without Administrator Rights (backwards, isn't it?!).

5. In your Data\skse\plugins\CharGen (or if you're using MO, overwrite\skse\plugins\CharGen), find your exported head .nif and drag it to the left side of NifMerge.

6. In your Data\meshes folder (or RS Children\meshes folder, if you're using MO), find the child's .nif. In the search box, type in *XXXXX. XXXXX being the five digits. 000XXXXX.nif should show up as a result. Drag it to the right side.
  • If the child is part of a mod and you're not using MO, you'll have to manually search through the meshes\actors\character\facegendata\facegeom folder for the mod's .esp name.

7. On the right side, find the headparts with "hair" and/or "hairline" in their names, and tick the boxes to the right of them. Make sure those two are the ONLY boxes that are ticked. Then in the "Source" column, match the headparts for those two.

Your NifMerge should look something like this:

8. Hit "Merge to Target." Exit NifMerge, check in-game.
  • Ignore the messages that say the vertices don't match.
  • NifMerge manually backs the original files. It's recommended that each time you plan to change the same child's hair, you delete the already-NifMerge'd .nif, and restore the backup, before repeating these steps to change the hair.
  • If you're using KS Hairdos, especially the longer hair types, it'll likely shoot you a message saying the .nif lacking the appropriate bones, and you'll have to take the more conventional route and it's more complicated than these steps and you should have some knowledge of the CK. You'll have to find the hair .nif and .tri files manually, copy it into meshes\actors\character\ranaline\hair\, rename them to cf01 (or cm01), make a backup of the child's .nif, open up CK, manually choose the corresponding headpart, and Ctrl+F4. This will make sure the head model has the supporting bones. Then you drag the Ctrl+F4'd .nif to the right side, and the backup .nif to the left, and merge over the face, mouth, eye and browparts to the Ctrl+F4'd nif.
