Plenty of plot hooks for the future - whether random stories or a larger over-arching story with Mehrunes Dagon.
As for what Grim will do now? Well he was never really cut out to be a thief and Erik has always disliked it. But they both enjoy hunting Thalmor and the undead - two things the Black Wolf Company excels out.
So the three of them will return to the BWC under the leadership of Captain Sayid. Which is roughly where Grim started when he was 16 and newly arrived in Skyrim.
Anyhow appreciate you coming back to see the ending of this story, means a lot. I know Azura seemed a bit odd but she can see visions and had access to the matrix code of Grim's soul. She also did want to protect people in her own selfish way. What cost some of Grim's freedom if it meant averting a possible dark future? To someone like Azura its a small price.
Looks like Azura did it for greater good, or that is greater good in her opinion, but in one thing she might be right - that Grim still has hard time controlling his emotions and he has to learn patience, yet for all his adventures he id emerge victorious, so maybe her version of future might not come to pass, since it is very hard to believe that Grim can be corrupted and by Prince of Destruction no less!
Looks like Grim's father managed to find a proper way to mend things, because I doubt anyone will try to steal for him and if they will, he will sure put a great fight. I am looking forward to see Fenn as thieves guild leader! I bet it would be very intriguing prospect, given his playful and mischievous nature.
I had always planned on it being Azura because Grim had been inside her gem in the past and thus was able to link to his soul and make the trap even with all the protection he has. Plus I know Azura can be arrogant and likes to collect males for pleasure (based on her lore I read). So she did it for her own conceit and what she thought was the greater good.
I also left some plot lines there just in case I want to do some more stories on Grim relating to those dark visions of Azura. For now Fenrir, as the Thistle King, will help to watch over Nirn as its "temporary" Guardian and use Grim's energy in the gem to this end.
In the mean time Fenn will be on his own mission to take over the TG and meet Fenrir's bargain with Nocturnal. It also lets me do some stories with Grim and the Thistle King showing up in Fenn's stories if I want.
Cool way to have her be involved in Grim's affairs as well as the added "sister" relationship with Nocturnal. I do find the Star to be one of the most underrated artifacts you can deal with. The ability to harvest as many souls as you want (including in the case of the black star) is something infinitely powerful if it fell into the wrong hands.
Very cool trick of Fenrir to find his way into it as well as Hirsine's plan to get Grim out of there along with his soul. Naturally, the trickster wolf being the new Guild leader is quite a fit and should give them both many adventures to come.
Plus I think people just expect Princes to act like people which I think can be dangerous. Azura didn't even need a "human" reason to do what she did although I gave her one.
Grim abhors soul magic - doesn't use enchantments or conjuration (which is like slavery to him which he also abhors), hunts undead and necormancers and slavers with a passion. So the Star is something he abhors - although he would rather see it white than black which is why he helped Azura way back when. It is a very powerful artifact indeed.
I figure if anyone could get into it it would be Fenrir. Also Hircine has blood ties to Grim and Fenrir so I figure they could help him manifest through Grim. He basically laid traps such that if he was forced to leave unwillingly they would detonate and destroy parts of the lattice of the Star - repairable by Azura but only after much effort and power.
Bravo!!!!
It was a very interesting twist that is was Azura that had set that trap for Grim and not a more familiar foe that he has faced before, she does not seem the scheming sort, in some way she did have a point but she might not have gone about it quite the right way, trying to keep hold of his divine soul.
It is fortunate for Grim that Fenrir and Hircine were close by ready to jump in and keep Azura from making him her pawn. You did wonderful work tying up some story threads with Fenrir appearing as Fenn and Grim and Erik sharing some intimate time in the end
Funny as Fenrir is not like that - Fenrir is subtle, charming, a trickster full of schemes. But Fenrir was created by Lorkhan through Hircine and Kyne. So from Kyne Fenrir gets his great wisdom. From Hircine he gets his strength and feral nature. From Lorkhan he gets his cunning and sense of trickery.
Grim, on the other hand, is not like his father. From Hircine he gets his love of the physical aspects of life, being direct and using force. From Kyne he gets his kind and generous nature and his love of animals and the wilds. From Lorkhan he gets his fondness for mortals and taking care of Nirn.
Anyhow there is a difference between plans and schemes. Schemes are more secret plans. Azura makes many long range plans. This was one of them based on her visions. The lore says Azura can see the future to some degree. Lore also indicates she can be cruel and wise, vain and egotistical. Also that she sometimes enslaves mortal males to be her lovers. All of that is directly from TES Lore and not my own view point. In addition her interactions with the Morrowind Tribunal suggests she is not big on mortals becoming gods.
A direct quote:
I know you see Azura as "good" (I do as well as far as Daedra go) but she can also be petty and cruel. Based on all of her lore I felt this was something she might do. To her view point she is helping Grim ( a lesser being) by taking him under her wing and training him. Perhaps she also had plans to enslave him as her lover. She needs to control him, however, because he is powerful as a divine being and hence the soul trapping.
I didn't really see her as the type to "ask permission" on something like this although that would have been the "wise" choice for her. But I think this is a case where her vanity and ego got in the way of wisdom. Or more directly she just didn't even think it would be an issue.
Anyhow that is my rational on why I chose Azura being the one behind this. Also I think too many people expect "human" logic and morals behind why the Prince's do things. I am not sure we can apply those standards. Even so Azura had a vision, possibly saw her followers and people under threat, and took action to take care of it.
Now, Grim can start his ways in the thiefes guild together with Fenn ... oh, what a turn
The pictures, you made for this great conclusion, are ( as always ) wonderful and I like the dreamlike appearrance of Nocturnal and the coloration inside the star. Exactly the tale-mood, I like so much. Both, Fenn and Grim, are looking so manly, hard to tell, who is the favourite. I would say, both are very manly. The pics of them could be wallpapers of heros
Lastly I had to chuckle about the second pic from the end ... a naked foot ... a nice hint to this, what really counts ... true love
I suspect that while Grim will always have ties to the TG that he will spend most of his time now working with the Black Wolf Company. He has missed his pack. The semi-military style of the BWC provides a sense of family - one that is more loyal and solid than the family of the TG, at least for Grim and Erik. Plus Wolfgar didn't like living in the sewers. The BWC lives more like the Orcs with forts out in the wild with their shamans. Wolfgar fits right in there. So Grim, Erik, and Wolfgar will join up with their friends Eir, Arnbjorn, Captain Sayid and others in the BWC. From there they will work on driving out vampires and Thalmor from the lands of the Great North.
Meanwhile Fenn will be leading the TG and, of course, be allied with the BWC. Only Brynjolf and Karliah will know that Fenn is really Fenrir incarnated in mortal form.
I think Grim needs one full mortal life, at least, before he tries to take on the bigger role of Guardian of Nirn - even with the knowledge and skills Lorkhan shared with him. It was just too soon. Give him another 100 years or so and maybe he will be in a better place for it.
My plans on Fenn is to make him a Mage-Rogue and lead the TG in-game (one thing I never did in Skyrim - I always stopped after getting the skeleton key back to Nocturnal). I may even use some of the overhaul mods I normally avoid - as there are some for stealth and rogues that look interesting.
