I find crashes come more with scripted mods or too many HR mods that make you run out of memory. So I use only a small handful over well trusted scripted mods with light footprints to them. The majority are textures. Grim's game was over 2 years old and going strong. I tend to only crash when I loaded too many textures. Course I did get randoms but I get that with vanilla as well.
Regardless you don't need a lot if you pick carefully. My new game has 170 plugins versus the 220 or so that Grim had. Course I have 295 total mods but mostly textures and little CK stuff.
