Wow, I was not expecting Elisha there! Sad to see her get killed, but at least it was for a good cause. And I see Grim never quite got a chance to swear that oath.

Nice bit, too, with Mora using Sanguine's memories/perceived failings against him -- and Sam fighting back against them in the end! I think Dannee will have reason to be proud of him. Erik, Wolfgar ,and Avrein all did very well in the fight, with Erik being very much the Slayer in the end. His words when killing Ancano were quite fitting!

Anyway, well done, both pics and story! Now, to see how Grim fares in the Eye...

Many thanks Aaron - appreciate you reading these and I know all my latest stories have been very, very long!

Aye Hircine came to rescue just in time - just like in the movies lol So corny I know but it is all in good fun. I wasn't trying to be original. Just wanted some classic fantasy and adventure.

I really liked making some everyday heroes - so the entire team of "mortals" helped save the day until Sam got himself together. It was fun to write although took a very long time to do this story in both shots and text.

I have read all the comments as wanted to see what others thought , and reread this chapter twice..... really amazing work Jon, the thought in the story line, they way your brought each of them though each step in this quest............ each moment bringing them closer and closer to the end as it comes closer.....

The Way you showed the fears of Sam as they played though his mind and then use his love ( even if he yet to say the words ) for his Rose as he was on his knee's almost lost was pretty amazing writing.

When Erik summons the God of the Hunt, Grims uncle and now maybe the only one who can save him, loved how it worked out as he left the door open so Sam could also join in the battle. The battle scenes were all so amazing and well thought and played out .

I was sad to see Elisha die but then in battle sometimes not every one makes it even when it is sad and I know that it hurt Sam, I do hope he does not feel it is his fault .

Was interesting to see you use the pain but understandable as there is a very thin line between pain and pleasure ......Looking forward to the next part and learning what happens next ........ what a great journey you are taking on us Jon superb work as always and wow these shots

Wow Shelley - the comments are probably longer than the story lol - thank you so much for reading them and the story itself! I am glad you enjoyed this story and how I did the battle between Sam and Mora. I did my best to make it as epic as possible all things considered. I did what I could with the plot lines to have as many cast members involved as possible since this was the grand finale, as it were, of Grim's story (well this and part 2).

There will be a special cameo by Elisha ... well in a way ... coming up in CH14 :-) I think Sam will get it over eventually. A lot will depend on how Nataly decides to handle the aftermath on her end.

Really appreciate the support and glad you enjoyed the story!

well .. I feel like this will be a placeholder comment for something more that might never come, so I do hope you can forgive that. But as is the case with many stories here on the Nexus; many times yours; I do struggle to find the words I want to use to describe what I did enjoy most.. But I will try nontheless

First off great Images and I personally liked the Overall Balance of text and Images and the decisions you made concerning which medium to use for which Situation.

Now I do love the way you gave more insight into Elisha; aswell as into Sanguine/hircine interactions and the way Sam/Sanguine was forced to relive many of his less wanted memories which he had to overcome and use as a source of knowledge how to deal with mora; to use his own flaws and weaknesses against mora or more precise against the mortal Body mora was occupying. Glad that both Hircine and Sanguine were able to intervene before Grim gave his Soul to Mora even though I'm not sure what Grim will do with that Little Spoiler you gave at the end..

And even though we just learned more about Elisha I'm sad that she did die after she had so selflessly refused the Chance to leave and stayed to stand her ground and help all her friends and their friends in turn.

In any case great part of your epic Tale; can't wait for the continuation and thank you for all the hard work going into this Tale of yours and for sharing it

Thanks Alex and no worries - knowing you read and enjoyed them is a great comment regardless

Writing (and responding) to comments is a bit of creative writing in its own right anyhow. Those of us who tend to be wordy and write a lot tend to find it a bit easier I think. It tends to use the same skills and way of looking at things. Comments are often like conversations (with delayed responses) where you strike up a dialogue with the poster and review the things you liked, give feedback, and often ask questions or just elaborate on details you enjoyed.

But in general the important thing is just knowing someone read and enjoyed the story enough to say a few words about it as a comment :-)

So thanks for doing that and I am happy you enjoyed the story and images as well as the characters. Elisha was a special character to me but more because of how she acted in the game (in Grim's actual real game that I play) as she was just a simple student (from the iNPC mod) and yet she seemed to ALWAYS be following Grim and Avrein around whenever I was doing stuff at the college. So I made her a follower for the story as well. She was part of the big battle with Ancano and she was alive until the very end. I did not see her die so I know it was at the very end when I had disabled the eye so that Ancano could be killed - as she was alive shortly before that. Then when he was dead and the dust settled I saw her laying there with many of my crew (Avrein, Erik, and Sam) all looking at her. To me it was the game telling me this was meant to be. So that was how she ended up dying. If she had lived, in the game, I would have let her live on. It was very similar to what happened to Adrianne the smith in Whiterun during my story where Lucia, Grim's adopted niece, was attacked by vampires. Adrianne died fighting a vampire right outside Grim's house ... and it just seemed like the game was telling me that was part of the story.

Lastly the comment on Grim and the little spoiler at the end ... not sure what you mean there. Do you mean in the story or on my "Notes" section on part 2?

I ended Part 1 with Grim "floating" and lost inside the Eye of Magnus ... which is really a gateway to the domain of Chaos, the primal energy of creation. Hircine followed Grim into the Eye, in his wolf form, to track Grim and bring him safely out.

However in the previous chapter we learn that Grim used the Key of Fenrir on the Eye and that the Key held a small sliver of Fenrir's soul. That sliver of soul is now also floating in the Eye. Normally people using the power of the Eye interact with the energy inside by using the runes and charms etched on its "shell" and that was what Grim was supposed to do before Mora and Ancano interfered.

So while Hircine is hunting for Grim in the Eye ... Grim is hunting for Fenrir's soul sliver. In the process he discovers how to free Fenrir from inside the Eye. The problem is that he needs to use power to do it ... and that power could "splash" out of the Eye's containment field because its shell has become slightly twisted and unstable. If that Splash is small then maybe just Winterhold and part of Skyrim would be disintegrated. If the splash is big it could wreck havoc on overall stability of Mundus. So clearly he wants to do it with no splash at all. But in trying to contain the splash it means dealing with very powerful energies ... those energies could back lash and kill Fenrir, Grim, or both of them. Hopefully Hircine will find Grim and use his Wild Magic to help both of them contain the Splash and deal with the energies.

I was thinking about the part in the "notes for part 2" bit when I was talking about what Grim will do. As I think it might be a tough decision to realize that the Eye is to unstable to free Fenrir easily/with a small amount of Risk. So he basically has to decide if he wants to risk his own and more importantly (I assume) in this case Fenrirs Life and the whole of Mundus by attempting it anyway.
Because as I understand what you did explain here in the Comment I would assume that there is a possibility that Grim is able to divert the "splash" towards himself/fenrir .. but underestimating it he kills himself and fenrir and the "splash" gets out anyway .. so I assume that it will be quite interesting how he will deal with that mess

Aye you got it all down pretty much correct. The Eye is already very unstable thanks to Ancano and Mora. Grim did put the world into some jeopardy by making things worse when he tried to use it to free Fenrir but in this case his loyalty to his pack overcame his loyalty to society at large - that is how he is. Yet if he discovers his actions WILL definitely (versus possibly) destroy much of Skyrim then he would risk his own life to try and stop it. Plus he believes Fenrir is needed to stop the Thalmor or they will destroy things anyway!

IMO among the very best story work on the Nexus. And there are great authors here. BLOWN AWAY by this one! To have Sam, Hircine and that slimeball all in the same chapter.
Brilliant the way you showed Mora using Sam's memories and guilt to weaken him (Just as Selina had warned him in Nataly's work) Sam did not like his human friends shaming him and in the end cleared his mine thinking of the good memories of Dannee. Finding his strength and the way to use it against Mora. (I wonder if this event will inspire him to be honest with Dannee about his past?) Now he must also face the loss of a loyal follower.
Now we see Hircine fighting to save Grim. If Sam fears for Hircine's safety I wonder what chance Grim has? And can Fenrir still be saved even if Grim makes it out?
So much happening here that I almost might forget that little bombshell at the beginning....HIS NEPHEW??????
    Best ever Wolf!!

Thank you very much for this very nice comment, much appreciated! It was the Prince's Ball it seems with so many of them in one room at the same time. Should just add to the notoriety of the College!

I did have some contact with Nataly about my ideas but overall I kept the details secret from even her so she would have some surprises and enjoy the story. But we shared enough so that if she decides to she can now work all these stories I did with Sam, Mora, and Hircine into her own with Dannee. I am sure she is thinking about it! Consequently I expect Dannee might learn about some of this. Still Sam is emotional, stubborn, and has a lot of doubt still ... so how much he reveals about his past is still probably open to debate (i.e. up to Nataly of course).

In regards to his human friends "shaming" him I think that was mainly the fact that he realized he was walling in self-pity and letting them down. While he floundered in doubt (granted intensified by Mora) they fought on and he felt like he was letting them down. Plus what does it say about him when a wolf and some humans (and two Mer) hold of Mora better than a Daedric Prince? Even Sam has some pride and self-respect!

In regards to Hircine, Grim, and Fenrir - the only one guaranteed to survive is Hircine. He is immortal after all. Of course if he "dies" inside the Eye it would be the same as banishment and he certainly doesn't want that - no Daedra does. I would say the biggest doubt is around Fenrir and whether he lives or dies and what that might mean to Grim. If Grim dies so does Wolfgar (and vice-versa as they are linked body and soul). That being said Grim and Wolfgars mortal bodies might die and that would mean they are no longer mortal and have instead ascended to the Divine which some might say is being dead at least on the mortal plane. I suspect Erik would not be happy with it. So I guess the status of all three of them is actually open to debate. Guess you will have to wait for part 2 to know the answers *grin*.

Lastly his Nephew ... well in this case it isn't meant literally. A very long time ago I think Nataly, in one of her stories, had Sam refer to Grim as "his nephew" and that stuck so I started doing the same.

It is somewhat accurate as Sam is Hircines brother (in as much as the Princes are all related on a cosmic level). Hircine mated with Kyne and they had Fenrir as their son. Fenrir then mated with Alfrun and had Grim. That makes Hircine Grim's grandfather (and Kyne his grand mother) which has been in his stories since day one.

Consequently if Sam/Sanguine is Hircine's brother ... that would make Sam Grim's grand-nephew. So me and Nataly just have Grim refer to Sam as Uncle Sam or Uncle Sanguine (Erik sometimes calls him that as well although just to show his affection).

So not really a bombshell to the readers but it was to Elisha as she knew Grim was unusual but she had no idea just how unusual he was.

Seems Elisha had quite the unstteling view from her hiding place, seeing those moments before Grim and Friends reached the hall, an archmage falling to powerful spell, the tears of Mirabelle before the barrier closed the mages out. Was interesting to learn of Elisha's past, how she grew up much more open minded than many Altmer of the isles, how those sorts pushed her to seek out different ideas beyond those lands. It is unfortunate that in venturing to the college she ended up finding other close minded people but at least seeing Grim and Avrein changed that. I like that story woven about her family and how they followed Sanguine, her great-granmother must have amused indeed for him to watch over her and her descendants with that amulet, seems it was of much use, giving Sanguine a glimpse of the situation. She had a good way of seeing that disinterest that Grim and Avrein showed towards her despite their friendship, seeing it as a trick of Sanguin, shows a good sense of humor thatt she was amused. Was interesting to see that there was truth to what had been said about her great-grandmother, Sanguine helping her stay out of sight of that scheming Mora at just the right moment.

That description of how Kyne parted from Hircine before he made his way to the college was beautiful, that snow taking her form for a moment, that caress of the wind on his cheek, I like how you give her such a subtle gentle presence with that touch of mischief. That conversation between the deadric siblings was great, with that mix of tension, concern and Sam's sarcasm, they do relate to each other in an unusual way fitting of their nature. Was a good plan to distract Mora with his arrogance he is one to fall for that. Was brave and foolish of Elisha to have remained, to wake Erik among the danger filling that hall.

Mora's inability to understand how one can care about another is one of his weaknesses, making him think that Hircine was only bluffing until he appeared in that hall, his fury echoing among that ancient stone. Seems Mora's knowledge of spells is not as good as he thinks, that old sepll of the wilds taking him by surprise. His anger does seem to be terrifying to glimpse, all that savageness of the wilds in the air around him, I can understand why Erik would not want to see it again. Seems Hircine is putting himself in quite the danger, leaping after Grim into that deadly realm of the eye, he sure is determined to keep his pup among the living. Was also interesting to see Sanguine act the leader, telling Grim's friends what they should do, matching their roles to their strengths, a different side of him to see.

I really like how you depicted the battle between Mora and Sanguine, Sam having to fight his memories twisted by Mora's insidious power, his doubts and regrets hitting him like the strikes of a blade, sending him tumbling to the floor with their weight. Good that Sam was determined to be of help to Grim's friends, to show to Mora that he was not one so easily defeated. Nice to see him turn Mora's pleasure at his perceived triumph into debilitation pain, his spells wavering as he still spoke so arrogantly. I liked the teamwork of Erik, Avrein, Wolfgar and Elisha, Elisha stepping in when Avrein fell, keeping him fighting, Wolgar fighting through his wounds to defend the others, Avrein drawing Mora's power away, Erik keeping Ancano's body off balance. Was a measure of poetic justice that it was Mora that was the one banished to the far corners of oblivion, a lesson he better not forget, Sam having found his great strength when he need it.

It is sad that after that arrogant Mora was sent away and some hope for the return of Grim going around that Elisha was found to have fallen, I was fond of her, her having so much potential as a mage with rare wisdom and openness about the world, having so bravely fought to save her friends, stepping into danger when they needed her, she is sure to live on in all their memories as a hero.

A wonderfully written chapter with emotion and tension, really felt the danger of that battle. Fantastic work Jonathan, I am intrigued once more as to what will happen next

Howdy Alexi and thanks for stopping by to leave a comment and your thoughts about the story. I always enjoy reading those parts that you enjoyed or decide to comment on ... as well as how you interpreted the events in the story.

I will jump around a bit and say that he parts of Kyne are inspired by your own poetic writing. I think my version of Kyne and yourself would get along very well indeed if you ever met - both lovers of nature and the tranquil sense of peace that comes from a poetic description of the natural world.

Happy you liked Elisha and her sad ending was all the more tragic in that she was young (by Altmer standards) and one of the few of their kind that was open minded, less rigid, and friendly towards other races. In another time and place she would have been one of the few female characters I would not mind playing as myself. As I told Nataly I spent a very long time debating her fate and in the end I left it up to the random fate of the game itself as I simply could not bring myself to kill her even for the story. There is no way I could have ever done the /kill command on such a wonderful character. So her role at the end of the game was left up to fate. If the game let her live she would live ... and I actually thought she had as she held on for the entire battle. I was shocked to see her dead and it must have been one of the random spells Ancano cast. I was actually very sad as I had grown very fond of her. But I went with the "game" decision.Life is sometimes cruel and I did not want to take away her heroic and brave work by resurrecting her. If I did it made the "threat" meaningless. Part of being a hero is dealing with the fear of death (or I suppose torture, undeath, or other unpleasant things). Hopefully I am making sense here.

The battle itself was intense to write as I felt like I was there, inside each of them, as I wrote down their roles in the story. In a way it happened to them as the battle did occur - although of course I have my actual game version and the one I did for the story (to avoid save game corruption). Glad you enjoyed how I handled Mora, Hircine, and Sam. I admit I was nervous about writing so much stuff around three of the Princes. They are big powers after all. I think Sam's weakness tends to be his sense of doubt over so many things and his sensitive emotions. Mora has his arrogance and his inability to understand human emotions. Hircine - he can be over-confident in his own abilities. Still he has the Wild Magic at his command so some of it is justified at least in this case as far as jumping into the Eye. Of course when he jumped into the Eye he did have one major fear that he did not tell Sam as he did not want to shake his confidence. If Sam failed to defeat Mora then Mora would have locked Hircine in the Eye and that would have been a true banishment. Hircine put a LOT of trust in Sam and in part two of this story Sam finally figures that out and it makes him feel good and helps to counter some of the loss of Elisha ... okay that is a small spoiler but I doubt to many people will see this and just a small tidbit.

I admit I so enjoyed having Sam discover his true strengths and then defeated Mora, sending the gloating slime ball back home to Oblivion. He will be the laughing stock for a while. A dangerous enemy though. Yet Sam is not without his own allies nor did he do it alone - it was TEAM work (or PACK work I should say) that let Sam defeat Mora. Something Mora would never understand. In fact Grim's biggest strength are his friends. It is the fact that he works with others and watches out for his "pack" that he has made it as far as he had. That has not gone unnoticed by Hircine and it is one of the reasons that Hircine has become a bit more "friendly" towards mortals.

Anyhow thanks again for the comment Alex and very glad you enjoyed the story!
