...Though somehow I suspect you'll find a way to get Grim free of Mora, whether through the presence mentioned earlier, or some later trick that renders Grim's oath null and void.
And I think that armor may be my favorite of Grim's now.
Well done as always, Jon, both pics and story! Now on to the next chapter...
I can see one of two things happening here. One is that the mysterious presence Wolfgar sensed in the room is Dannee's Sam and he will step in to prevent this from happening (though I'd like to see Hircine get off his butt and come to the real world and intervene). Two, is that Grim will make the deal and your next 'Grim Saga' will deal with the results of this decision. I could see it as a way of integrating the 'Dragonborn' questline into your universe. Of course, you might have something entirely else up your sleeve... I can't wait to see how you take this latest development.
I think Av has well and truly made his bed with the humans (animals! ) now. I don't think, even if he wants to, that he could ever go back to aristocratic Thalmor society (probably not even Altmer society). However, I still don't know if he'll ever feel comfortable enough within himself to embrace his new beast blood. I'm having trouble seeing where he'll fit in with your grand vision (and that makes it all the more interesting)!
The music choices were on point my friend. Loved the dramatic battle perfect style in the first half, then the massively tension raising piece in the second half. Either your timing if perfect or it's the mother of all coincidences but I finished the last sentence just as the music ran out. Very epic.
Thanks for another wonderful instalment hon, and get cracking on the next puh-lease!!
I have plans for how things will end for Avrein ... how well that fits with the story and everyone else I am not sure. Aye he feels like a bit of an outcast at the moment. Half-breton, half-altmer, and besides beast blood he also has the heart-fire imbued in his body by Neloth ... something he would like to address should he be around to do so (meaning he wants to meet Neloth and have a talk with him).
Glad you enjoyed the music. I based the timing roughly on my own reading of the story although the final placement was also dependent on where I wanted the new music to start. The balance in pages worked out pretty good though.
Thanks again for reading and comment, always means a lot to hear from you! Hopefully the next chapter will be out soon. It has possessed me a little so I am busy working away on it everyday. It is a switch, however, that it is the images and not the writing taking the most time. Already had to scrub two photo-shoots which was very annoying.
The hardest shots are yet to come - working on them tonight and tomorrow. Then hope to finish the writing Friday/Saturday. But still to much to do to know really when it will be done.
Lot depends how late I stay up at night
Well Grim has no choice but to accept that slime balls terms. At least Grim was wise enough to negotiate his friend's safety.
But Grim as Mora's champion????? What a dark twist that is. It sounds to me like dear Sam is present, but what can he do against Mora? But I for one am glad to know he is there.
Poor Ancano, I don't know why but am sad to see that weasel die
Epic chapter my friend! On the edge of my seat waiting for the next!!!
Afraid Ancano finally got in over his head. But he did get to be a god for a day. Besides he will now be helping Mora keep his library clean. Maybe he will learn a thing or two.
Grim sure was focused on the task at hand, wondering what plan they had to deal with the foes in the college a touch of frustration in his words. I liked that chuckle of Faralda at Avrein's words, good that she did not lose that sense of humor even in those moments, cuts through a bit of that tension among the swirl of the snow. Was great how you wrote about the confrontation with those Thalmor, interesting to see Avrein speak to try to make them see the danger they were in, that they did not control the situation, him defending Grim from the preconceptions they had. Seems that Aldaril was not one to listen to reason, being too lost in hatred in propaganda to see the truth, unfortunate that some soldiers that might have shed their foolish thoughts died along with him, a difficult thing for Avrein. The group sure made quiet work of them, drawing that magic away from them as one knocks blade or now out of one's hands. Good to see that Avrein felt some freedom in that battle, making his own choice of who to side with, free of being a puppet for others and he is brave to live with his choices. Was also nice that Avrein had gained the trust of Erik having stepped forward to speak, having shared in that battle.
Grim showed one of the traits of a leader as they found themselves in the College's halls, showing that great confidence even though he had some concerns, keeping them hidden away to keep their morale for the fight to come. Was intriguing how Wolfgar encountered a familiar smell as he wandered the shadows about the room, sensing that presence of sanguine, I wonder what he is up to. Looks like despite what power Ancano was drawing from the eye, Grim's friends caught in that spell, that he could not keep Grim away, finding all too late how foolish he was to deal with Mora, that blade finding its mark as he pleaded for help from that unsympathetic daedric prince.
Of course that Mora had to set a trap for Grim, waiting for him to near the eye before manifesting himself in Ancano's body, twisting the ritual to keep the eye from unraveling to his own purposes. Such a cruel way he found to try to get Grim in his service, Mora only thinking of him as a prized puppet he could make his daedric siblings jealous with. Good that Grim was able to set conditions to that service much to Mora's annoyance, his dealings with Nocturnal having helped him. One can see the kindness in his heart as even as he drew towards danger, he only thought of the safety of others, of those he held in his heart. I hope that whatever plans Kyne and Hircine had set into motion arrive to change the dire path of things, that Mora's plan can still be thwarted. I am very curious to see what will unfold next. Fantastic work, Jonathan, the chapter really drew me in, having me worried for Grim and his friends.
Fenrir is also the Winter Wolf - his domain includes Winter. Grim, as his heir, also has more control over Winter in general and since he has been getting more and more like Fenrir so does his "aura" reflect Fenrir. Hence the snow storm and the drop in temperature around him.
So all in all the group has made a lot of progress and Avrein is more or less accepted now - even though he has already decided their life is not for him. He wants to be friends with them but can't seem himself living the way they do. So if he survives the upcoming battles he will probably find something else to keep himself busy He just knows that the Thalmor xenophobia is wrong and that even though the Altmer race may be superior (grin) all races deserve a chance at life.
Grim did his best to lead the pack and act like an Alpha - being protective and taking the most risks. Sadly this may also mean sacrificing everything he has to save those he cares about. Hopefully Mora's plan will be thwarted ... and the price won't be too costly!
great chapter (and cliffhanger) my friend. Glad to see avrein not taking his last Chance to get back into thalmor ranks but instead Standing his ground with girm and erik.
Glad that Ancano got what he deserved in the end, even though not sure if his Soul being pulled out of his Body by mora is a fate even he deserved.
I still have hope that either Sanguine or his allies (if I'm right about the presence Wolfgar noticed); Hircine or maybe even Avrein/Tolfdir/Erik will be able to interfere and stop Grim from giving away his Soul and the Eye to Mora.
Even though I sadly have to agree with Mora. The for the time best way to deal with the Eye in my opinion would be to lock it up in one of the planes of Oblivion; far enough away that no mortal would be able to reach it.
But I do not agree that it should be mora's plane - even though not quite sure which other prince would be able to only guard it without using it for his own nefarious plans..
In any case absolutely great writing and altering of the vanilla quest lines once again and stunning Images. More than very will done!
Well the two princes are aware of what is happening but there are some complications - mainly Mora is blocking all the princes from the College ... but Sanguine managed to reach his follower so maybe he can help Hircine reach his ... and then things will get interesting.
In regards to Ancano and his soul - in general the cost of most any deal with a Prince, especially being their champion, is that their soul goes to their plane upon their death. The price Ancano paid for power. I am sure Mora will tire of him quickly and then Ancano will do whatever it is souls do for eternity there. Probably better than being in Cold Harbor I think.
What happens to the Eye and the Staff will depend on what happens to Grim, Fenrir, Mora, Sanguine, and Hircine I think ... although I expect that Erik, Wolfgar, and Avrein are also going to pull their own weight and have some surprises planned.
Glad you enjoyed it all and thanks again for the nice comment!
