has pretty much been my mini bible making meshes since I started and it's always worth a quick read over again before starting a new one. Lots of useful links in it as well to other mesh related stuff.
While it's still looked down on by many, Blender (imo) is the easiest program ever to UV map with and has a great UV test grid to test the mesh for UV distortion. Well worth a look.
While zbrush is obviously HP king, Mudbox is great for weapons. You can do some really cool stuff using organic sculpt techniques on a hard surface object. You can build your own textures directly into the normal rather then be constrained by photo resources. Things like the freeze function make material separation near perfect. http://www.mediafire.com/view/m9tzl4rrap15jym/cabal1.jpg
You can get a totally free and legit version here (along with 3ds max and a host of others) with a 3 year student license once you sign up. http://www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/mudbox
youtube overdose is the best way to learn it... there's pretty much everything about 3dsmax or blender there i spent some hour watching basic tutorials and made this the day after....it's unfinished, and lacks of unwrap....but has been damnly fast. worth ....definitely

When we will see your next work?
I wrote you some weeks ago about forts, lod's and stones...
if you are still interested pursuing it
Congrats on your first mesh mate, can't wait to see what else you come up with
Probably being a little silly offering help, I'm sure you have it all covered, but for what it's worth.....
João Costa's little tutorial/crib sheet over on polycount
