About this image

Ever since 11.11.11 I wanted to give Skyrim guards a major overhaul as their appearance bothered me.
This is my WIP guard overhaul concept art, with major viking inspired elements. This concept is mainly targeted towards the nationalist Nord faction sympathizers (Stormcloaks and allies) while the Imperialized guards will have a mix of Nord / viking elements combined with Imperial elements (as to a tiny degree already seen in the game).

The intention is to eventually create new armor for the guards in Skyrim, with minor variations just for the sake of diversity and major variations depending on rank (wolf / bear headed cloak for veterans or wolf cloak specifically for scouts with warpaint for better camouflage?)

I am new to 3d modeling but I am fairly decent at it so far - my highest concern so far is learning and properly applying mesh rigging and weighing. If you know of any guides or is an expert yourself, I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

Also, that beard is/could be a concept for a future beard style for my excising mod Beards. Again, if I ever get around tackling rigging - we'll see.

Enjoy

Are you by any chance still working on making this mod?

Dude... dude... wow... this is the most awesome armour concept I've ever seen. I love armours like this. Viking/Slavic kinda armour, I've always wanted it in Skyrim... I'm afraid I can't help you much, I know just a few basic things about modeling. But, wow, really... If you make this you'll be my favorite modder ever

Well, this is what I call an armor.
The vanilla Skyrim guards always bothered me, mostly because of how they looked. If this concept will ever see a light, that would be awesome.
Really, this is an excellent idea.

I hope it will. Creating completely new armor all from scratch and put it in Skyrim isn't just something you simply do.

(yes, I just generated a meme image just for this purpose)

These are the most detailed tutorials that i know: http://www.youtube.com/user/NightasyTutorials
Hope this help, the idea is awesome.

P.S.: on my burned Hd i've this helmet: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/images/362396/?
i've rigged it and work good, it only needs better textures.
I'm almost sure that i can fully recover the content of my old HD, it has only software issue (probably caused by the firmware), and, if you are interested on that helmet, i can send it to you without any problem.
Consider that in the last version i've removed the horns (but i haven't taken a screenshot...).

Thanks for the link, although it'll be a pain going trough all to find what I need (as I couldn't find a video specific for rigging).

I appreciate the offer, but I actually started on the helmet already have have pretty decent results so far (although, not completed yet). That also means, once I release (if ever) this I'll be able to say it's 100% my own work - sounds better. I would have taken the offer hadn't I already started working on it.

What software are you using for modeling? I've started using 3ds Max 2011 and, if you want a tip for the rigging and the weight painting of an helmet, i can recomend you the Skin Wrap Modifier. Basicly you need to import on your scene a vanilla helmet with the skeleton, then chose your custom helmet, apply the Skin Wrap modifier, flag the voice Weight All Points, press the Add key and chose the vanilla helmet.
In this way you have a weighted and rigged helmet that you can export as a nif.
Hope this is clear and helpfull, but if you need more clarification contact me without problem.

P.S.: sorry if i've made some mistakes with the english, but i'm a little drunk, so be patient

I use 3DS Max 2012. I'll give it a try once I get around to it.

This is a really cool concept, and I hope you manage to get it actualized. My wife is a 2D and 3D freelance animator/illustrator and so, through her, I've come to understand just how hard rigging can be. Best of luck! I'll ask if she knows of any good tutorials, and, if so, I'll pass along a link

      Thanks Jafin16,

That is especially why I'm concerned when even experienced 3d modelers may have concerns about rigging. I'd appreciate any help I can get, so you have my thanks.

Looks awesome. I'm also a big fan of historical based Viking arms and armor so, to me, this looks perfect. And of course any talk of adding more beards to your beard mod makes me happy. Looking forward to seeing this idea develop further.

Thanks cashmoney111. If possible, there's quite a few beard concepts I want to build and add to Beards.
