FileFront closing its doors - Not anymore!!!

    posted by Dark0ne Game News
EDIT 4/2/2009 by LHammonds - FileFront is no longer being closed as it was re-acquired by the original founders.

Popular file-sharing website FileFront is closing its doors in the very near future. Here's the blurb:

    QUOTE
We regret to inform you that due to the current economic conditions we are forced to indefinitely suspend the FileFront site operations on March 30, 2009. If you have uploaded files, images or posted blogs, or if you would like to download some of your favorite files, please take this opportunity to download them before March 30th when the site will be suspended.

We would like to give a warm thank you to all of you who have been part of the FileFront communities we have built together. Your support has had a meaningful impact for all of us here at FileFront. Again, we want to give you a sincere “thank you” for your support over the years and wish you all the very best.

    Keep gaming alive,
    FileFront Management and Team.

While FileFront wasn't as prominent in the Elder Scrolls community as it was in some other gaming communites (the KoTOR community, for instance, heavily relies on FileFront) it still represents a noticeable loss, and many people have mirrored their files on FileFront. If you are one of these individuals then you should be warned your files will no longer be available on FileFront after the 30th of March.

I wish the staff at FileFront all the best.

On a side note, please realise FileFront is not the same as FilePlanet, so PES is fine.

New premium member only file server added

    posted by Dark0ne Site News
As per the recent file server consolidation announcement there is now a new Premium Member only server available. Located in Texas, this server has download resuming features enabled and is capable of multi-threaded downloading. I managed to get a good 1mb/sec download speed off the server using the "DownThemAll!" FireFox plugin. Without the plugin I get only 120kb/sec. So if you're a premium member and you're a big downloader then I'd totally recommend the plug-in to you.

The London based Premium only server will remain operation for another month or so yet.

    YouTube videos on file pages

    posted by Dark0ne Site News
Here's something I've been meaning to do for a while! Do you like making videos of your mods to show them off on YouTube, or has someone else made a video using your mod and put it on YouTube for others to see? Instead of cluttering up your file description you can now add links to YouTube videos that are relevant to your files.

YouTube videos you add show up in their own tab, next to your images tab, and provide a gallery of simple to operate YouTube videos for people to watch straight off the site. So stop cluttering up your file descriptions with YouTube videos and put them all in a nice easy to access area. You can add links to your YouTube videos via the new "Videos" link, under "Images" in your file management area.

TESNexus records highest trafficked day of all time

    posted by Dark0ne Site News
In light of the recent server upgrades it seems only fitting that yesterday (Sunday, 8th March) was actually the highest trafficked day of all the site's history, dating back to August 2001.

The last record was held by TESSource on the 5th of April 2006 (just after the launch of Oblivion) where the site clocked an impressive 75,489 unique visitors.

Yesterday set the record at 76,396 unique visitors and only stands to confirm the longetivity of Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series, and personally a testament to just how important the modding community is to the continued success of the game almost 3 years on from Oblivion's original release. Bethesda themselves confirm a recent resurgence in playing figures on the XBox 360:

    QUOTE
Fun fact: the number of people playing Oblivion has gone up since this past December. While I can’t give the actual numbers, the number of folks playing Oblivion while logged onto Xbox Live has increased back to late 2006 levels (roughly 8 months after Oblivion shipped). There are lots of reasons why this may be - 360 user base is larger now, Fallout 3 fans going back to Oblivion or trying out Oblivion, Oblivion is cheaper/on sale, etc…

So good news all around I'd say.

The high traffic figures have also been a great benchmark for the recent server move. Hopefully everybody can agree that the server(s) have been far more stable since the move, with far less IPS Driver Errors. I haven't actually seen any myself, but some forum users have reported a couple. Hopefully much much less than before.

The forum software had some extra memory pumped into it yesterday too, so hopefully that should bolster it up even more.

    Update
Sunday 16th of March sets another new record at 77,764 unique visitors, beating last weeks highest ever total by more than 1,000 visitors.

    File server issues and consolidation

    posted by Dark0ne Game News
When it rains, it pours! I am aware of the current issues with the file servers for both TESNexus and FO3Nexus. This is a completely unrelated issue to the down-time and work that went on yesterday and revolves around a financial move by myself to consolidate the current servers.

Several ISPs are currently in a price war with their 100mbit unmetered services that has brought prices right down. As a result TESNexus and FO3Nexus are being taken down to 1 file server each, along with an addtional premium server, but with a higher throughput than originally available. The current issue lies with the ISP incorrectly locking the network connection at 10mbit rather than 100mbit (so there's some major congestion going on!) and is being looked into as we speak.

The London based servers are being taken offline; bandwidth in the UK costs about twice as much as the US at this time, and what with being in a recession and all it is important I consolidate the available resources and save pennies where-ever possible, even if it's at the expense of some user comforts. A site that works, but is slightly slower, is better than no site at all! This also includes the premium server, which will be taken offline some time next month and replaced by a server in Texas. The Texas premium server will be available within the next week, so for a month or so premium members will have two servers to choose from!

It's important to point out that these are preemptive measures in light of the economic climate and I'm not taking a negative approach to expanding and supporting these sites.

    Down-time over

    posted by Dark0ne Site News
The forums have now been moved on to their own server and I have now entered the phase of tweaking the new setup to better accommodate the situation. Please be patient if problems arise, I am monitoring all the servers in real-time and will be performing various tweaks over the next 24 hours to improve the current setup further.

    Expected down-time Wednesday 4th March

    posted by Dark0ne Site News
As part of plans to stop the recent spate of "IPS Driver" errors I will be moving the forums on to their own dedicated server. As a result all the Nexus sites, including the forums, will be offline tomorrow from 12pm GMT to 6pm GMT while the move takes place. Please be patient during this process; I will update the sites throughout the process should any potential issues arise that require me to leave the sites down for longer.

Data Center issues causing problems with the site

    posted by Dark0ne Site News
It has come to my attention that my main web server provider is having some quite major issues, so much so that even their main website is down for me. For those with a technical mind I haven't gotten around to setting my own name servers up since the site move a couple of weeks back and so my domains DNS reside at my server provider. Since they've gone down the domains no longer route to where they should.

Sites affected include the file servers and Fallout 3 Nexus. TESNexus and the forums, interestingly enough, still seem to be operational.

Hopefully this issue will be resolved by the server provider as soon as possible. To make matters worse I'm booked in with the girlfriend tonight and will not be at a workable PC until tomorrow.

I apologise for the issues but for once it's not my fault and, of course, yet again, it has come at a bad time.

I'll update you all tomorrow but in the mean time, please direct people who haven't read this announcement (especially on the official forums) to this news post if possible. Thank you.

I've just checked up on the sites before hitting the sack and they all seem to be working again. Hopefully that's good news and there will be no further problems.

    Nexus reaches 750,000 registered members

    posted by Dark0ne Site News
It's milestone time again, and a couple of days back TESNexus (and now FO3Nexus!) reached the 750,000 registered members mark. The last milestone of 500,000 members was reached on January 2nd 2008, the 250,000 member milestone was reached on October 13th 2006 and the 100,000 member milestone was reached on the 30th of March 2006, so registration rates are increasing.

The recent launch of FO3Nexus helped to more than douple the daily registration numbers from 800 new members a day up to 1800 new members registering each and every day and thus speed up the march to this latest milestone. The next one is a biggy, the big one million!

Sadly I missed the actual milestone date because I was busy sorting out all the server move issues, that are now resolved, so it's a nice "trophy" to top off a successful and worthwhile server move. Thanks everybody.

    Expected down-time today

    posted by Dark0ne Site News
There is an underlying issue with the network infastructure of the two new servers that needs to be resolved. Work will be taking place some time today for approximately two hours. During this time the site may be offline or you might see "IPS Driver" errors and other similar mysql related errors.

Please be patient while I continue to weed out the teething issues of the server move. Thank you!

Edit@16:40GMT: This work has now been completed. No more expected down-time o/
