    Hey thank you for that!
It seems to me that if you buy the game and a work around is found that allows you to take your game and put it on your pc without steam, as long as you don't gain from it financially (pirate) and use it for your own use, you should be fine.
That's the context of what I read.
My plan was to wait for a work around before I picked it up anyway.
Now I can go D2D, apply the work around (if it is needed with D2D) and go ahead and play my game.
There should be no problem with that and I don't see how that would be considered pirating since they will get their money and it is now my property for my own use.
I'm not paying for a rental, where the owner of the product can tell me how and when to use it.

I see this kind of thread all over, and I fully understand the frustration with Steam. Personally, I won't have it on my computers; it does nothing for me but take up space and CPU cycles.

Fortunately, in a recent court decision, a federal judge upheld fair use, and basically countered the DCMA. Basically, if you legally own a product, circumventing the DRM is legal. (Merely bypassing a technological protection that restricts a user from viewing or using a work is insufficient to trigger the (Digital Millennium Copyright Act's) anti-circumvention provision, The DMCA prohibits only forms of access that would violate or impinge on the protections that the Copyright Act otherwise affords copyright owners.)

I'm not going to get my hopes up, then.
They seem pretty determined to keep it a steam thing and the masses are practically delirious with joy over steam.
No biggie to me. I can easily forget about it.

Direct2Drive games do not use Steam. You just buy them, download them, install them, and play them. Only certain games possibly require Steam if they say This title installs and requires a 3rd party download to play and is not eligible for refunds. Such is the case with Dead Island. There are games on Direct2Drive which have been said to be Steamworks games before such as F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, but there is no Steam required. Rage is also on Direct2Drive and does not say it requires a 3rd party download.

YOu mean something like this :

This product is available for purchase in the United States and Canada and is not eligible for refunds.

And under requirements it says :

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Download Minimum System Requirements

    TBD

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Download File Size
    TBD
    Version
    TBD
    Publisher
    Bethesda Softworks
    Developer
    Bethesda Game Studios

TBD --- which means they do not yet know what the requirements will be so chances are it will require Steam authentication still and that will be added to the requirements and at that point it is too late to get a refund if you do not want to use Steam !!

If it is a simple dl with no strings attached, this will be the way I go.
As it is, I just completely re-modded Oblivion for a strictly non-combat pickpocket/stealthy and just received my copy of Morrowind through ebay.
I'll be very busy playing these games so I'll have plenty of time to see if there's a catch.

Thanks for the info, by the way! I will remain optimistic!!

Direct2Drive version of Skyrim here for people who don't like Steam: http://www.direct2drive.com/11413/product/Buy-The-Elder-Scrolls-V:-Skyrim-Download

Spread the word. <img class="> The bad thing is it's only for USA and Canada.

That should be interesting --- buy the encrypted files from D2D that have a modified .exe file so that mods will not work with it and then probably wind up having to install STEAM anyway since Skyrim is going to use steam for verification and then you have to hope that the 2 DRM clients find a way to get along well enough to actually let you start the game !! (unless they are actually removing the Steam verification which is doubtful since the Retail copies are still using it)

Moxica, as usual I am in full agreement with you. You summed up exactly how I feel about pc's and consoles. Bravo!

Now, as to those who call us cry babies, I do have to say this:

We're entitled to our opinions. And in this case many of our opinions happen to be negative ones. I think we're being perfectly rational about it. We're not ranting or whining for it to change. I don't think it's 'unfair' that Skyrim is going this way. I just can't be bothered with it.

We're not telling anyone they have to dislike Steam. It's just not for some of us. Anyone who likes it, great. Go for it and enjoy Skyrim <img class=">

But you don't have to criticise those of us who aren't interested in it. Our opinions are valid, even if you don't agree with them.
