Oblivion

Bethesda calls Skyrim "too big"

  • Comment
Skyrim's game director and producer Todd Howard jokingly stated in an interview with the Norwegian magazine Gamer.no that
The game is actually too big.

Not that the map will be much bigger than Oblivion's. According to the interview the maps are about the same size. Howard said
If you put the maps on top of each other it is about as big as its predecessor. But Skyrim is different because of all the mountains that form our routes.
The terrain makes it smaller in practice, but you spend more time trying to move through it because they often can not be crossed. So it probably seems bigger.

He also said that there will be six or seven different types of environments, which should provide quite a bit of variation in the game world. The image to the right shows one of these environments. Howard stated
You have already seen the spruce forests and mountain-ranges. We also have grassy tundras, a volcanic tundra, a forest in the theme of autumn and a glacier.

Concerning dungeon, Howard stated that there will be around 120 dungeons in the game. He also said that there will be more diversity among the dungeons/caves in Skyrim than there was in Oblivion. Dungeons and caves in Skyrim will range from ice-coated to vegetation-covered and will all maintain some degree of uniqueness.

I think that is awesome. It just sounds to me more like Morrowind. In Oblivion, you can walk almost anywhere except some edges of the map. Morrowind had mountains all over and that made it more interesting. And here's to hoping they scrap fast-travel.

and set the jokingly in bold red letters like that <img class=">

There's nothing that is too big. And much less with the 6,8 gb's 360 DVDs' limitation.

Sadly yes @ dvd capacity - and before anyone even thinks bluray - they're too slow given
we still have ingame loading from the medium... <img class=">

I can't wait until I can get my hands on this to begin working on new projects. I already have a monstrosity lined up involving a new world space. Needless to say it'll be the most ambitious project I've tackled aside from one I have going for Oblivion now.

Yeah, I will get it for the PC no matter how much I have to pay to upgrade my computer!

After summer (after earning some money^^), I'm going to spend 900$ on some new PC equipment. Is it necessary? No, but I just want it.

@Zaldiir since we both own consoles I will say this. Consoles are good but compared to PC's which can handle the open-cities that the current console gen can't, so Pc alone from that is better for TES. PC will continue getting updates and you can optimize them for performance consoles no unless well, I would rather not talk about that. Reason most like consoles is that they are cheap compared "to the word that the government hates" Stimulus PC or at least the ones that can run games well. I would rather get a PC then the consoles that I already own again. That is unless a game that is very good like Red Dead Redemption or something stays on console only.

Everyone know that game companies get the most money from consoles unless it is PC only. (That is one thing I don't get WOW is supposedly the most sold series of a game series in the world. TES has far reached beyond that. So I don't know, Oblivion has sold 1.9 million in the first month or two I think. It is probably beyond 15 Million now.)

What I think Bigger + Detailed + Fun = Epicness. If it is not fun which everyone of TES so far were fun in my opinion. I won't play it. Still modding is a great part of TES series I could live without out it, yes (1000's of hours played of Oblivion alone back in the day, 360. Decided to get PC because of the awesome mods I saw on youtube.) But mods add more fun and playability to it. So in all I pick PC over consoles.

The world was certainly bigger when crossing it in 80 days was yet bigger feat. A good producer with a great story could make a really BIG game passing whole in a single house. On the other hand is hardly a big game if it pass on the entire world and have nothing to do other than kill poor monsters trying to live a peaceful life, but that may be only I and my strange tastes <img class=">

And I assure you I'm not confusing big with great.

As long as you can just fast travel everywhere size becomes pretty meaningless imo. I personally always found Oblivion a bit small, but am not too sure if forcing the player to walk fixed paths to make the map feel bigger is really an improvement. Time will tell though.
