Oblivion

Elder Scrolls freebies reminder.

As we all wait patiently for the release of Bethesda's Skyrim I thought it would be a good time to remind everyone that you can still currently download the first two Elder Scrolls games for free. These games will allow you to relive the history of the Elder Scrolls series while we wait for our next great adventure from Bethesda. They require DOSBox which is also linked below.

The Elder Scrolls I: Arena
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
DOSBox

It's going to scare me when they release TES:Morrowind as a free game...
Already been out, what, 10 years? It'll just make me feel old. I've bought somewhere close to 4 copies of morrowind, and 3 copies of oblivion. That's dedication. I should get Skyrim FO FREE. Any news on a collectors edition?

Well, here I am playing Daggerfall once again. That first dungeon is actually a challenge... there are no soldiers or a King to help me out... I've died at least 10 times...there's a thief down the stairs around that first corner of the hallway and he keeps killing me. My weapon has no effect on the imp..I've died again. All I have is a short sword and an alchemy ingredient. After playing through that first dungeon and going to the outside world...it is just massive. The graphics are blocky and rough but, it is just an immense feeling. I actually rolled for my character stats. There are so many skills to build up. I am prohibited from using certain items because of my class. I chose to be a fighter class and have 0 magicka in my bar. I actually NEED potions of healing. I actually need an amulet of mark and a amulet of recall. Getting lost in a dungeon is easy. It was frustrating in Oblivion to get an Amulet of Water Breathing at level 2 , it made making water breathing potions kind of useless other than to sell them. This is what these games used to be like before the eye candy graphics. I really like the newer graphics but, they have taken away some of what these games used to be like. I guess if you didn't play it when it came out you wouldn't really know. In Daggerfall you weren't lead around on a leash with people telling you where to go. Yes, I'll most likely get Skyrim.... but I miss the older format for the games. Have fun all!!!

    Sorry for double posting

I downloaded Daggerfall and am playing it and well it's awesome. Takes a lot of getting used to in the beginning with all the controls but once you've got it settled the game world is just large and gigantic!
I have yet to get lost in there but I will soon.
Give it a try but don't cry if it gives you doubts in the beginning of the game.

Seems like an opportunity to try them older games out

    Thanks for the reminder!

    EDIT:
    @ Azrax
I'll try the installer, seems a lot more simple and by the way the URL for the newbie FAQ didn't work because of the : after Daggerfall.
I erased that and it worked

I was wondering, since shortly after Oblivion came out, Daggerfall became free, will Morrowind become public domain shortly afterwards?

I've played ES games since Arena. While the graphics are rough and not up to date...maybe corny by today's standards, you will notice the difference in how large the older games are compared to the newer. I beat Jagar Tharn in Arena at the end. Daggerfall was an immense game (2 weeks real time to walk across it) and it was HUGE. I had always wished they would have ironed out the many bugs Daggerfall had so I could finish it. DF was the whole continent of Tamriel and just endless places to go. I think the newer eye candy graphics have taken away much of what the ES games were and each time a newer game comes out..well... you'll see. The amount of skills has been getting lower... the number of cities ... items you can get. DF had a horse and cart you could buy...it also had skills like climbing, creature languages... etc. Also in DF you could get lost in a dungeon get a disease and possibly die. It was challenging. I played Morrowind and Oblivion also and do notice these differences. I'll most likely get Skyrim..it depends on how many body parts I have to sell to upgrade my computer to play it... hah. I'm really disappointed at the loss of levitation. But, good luck with Skyrim... I hope its worth all the hype. Peace.

PS. To Nightmare BR... yes... that is when the ES games were challenging... left in a dungeon with nothing but what you get out of the dungeon...I'm glad you brought that up...unlike in Oblvion where you are virtually red carpeted out of the first dungeon.. have fun with DF... well if it doesn't crash too much hah.
