DDoS season begins, sites a little bit unstable

  • Comment
We've been no strangers to bog-standard DoS attacks and thousands-strong botnet DDoS attacks over the past 12 years. Any given week we'll be DoS'd, just most of the time you won't notice it because systems are in place to prevent such attacks. Every once in a while, though, someone with a rather large botnet or someone using more sophisticated techniques comes along that either requires us to adapt or just to weather it out. All I know is, it's been 12 years, we've survived countless DDoS attacks, and the sites aren't going anywhere.

Going hand-in-hand with that is the fact school holidays have begun which means kids have more time to waste. I used to enjoy playing football, cricket, skating and trampolining in my summer holidays but I guess some kids like to run bot nets instead. The why isn't really important (and I have no idea as to the why). All I know is that it's happening right now on the servers and we're doing what we can to alleviate the problem as best we can.

There's not much you can do on your end to fix this exact problem. There is, however, something you can do to help the general DDoS plague and that's to not be one of the millions of dolts out there browsing the internet without an anti-virus and firewall running as a bare minimum. Botnets form because "hackers" have gained access to insecure systems. The more insecure systems they control, the more powerful their botnet becomes. Typically gamers are more clued in than most in this regard, but still, I know some of you will be reading this without any anti-virus installed on your PC and to you I'll simply say this; you are a part of the problem. You're not the problem, but you're a part of it in the same way you're a part of the problem during an epidemic if you sneeze without covering your mouth with your hand or don't wash your hands after going to the toilet. You're in that group of people. You aren't the virus but you help to spread it through your lack of action. So get on to fixing it if you haven't already, or at least please don't complain to me about the sites being down if you're in that group.

A blunt news post, I know, but in all truth I treat DDoS attacks with utter emotional disregard. Not that we're not trying our hardest to solve the issue, but frankly, there's no point getting upset about it. Some idiot is DDoS'ing us and cowering behind the internet's anonymity, we've had no contact from said individual(s), it'll end when it ends or when we find a way to block it and there's no point getting upset about it.

This thread was about DDoS, which have since subsided/been stopped by the server move. Any problems you're having please direct to the feedback forum.

So, back to the original thread topic, is there any hope on the horizon yet? Been trying since last week to get Skyrim Requiem downloaded, to no avail. Skyrim Nexus is basically less than useless in its current state.

maybe they do it cause your security is pretty well taken care of.
i can imagine that it would be something of an accomplishment for a hacking script kiddie to down a well secured site, and since the nexus ain't a bank or something the risks of getting caught and punished for it is low.

ofcourse there probably are some mad banned kiddies out there too.
personally i would consider hacking a waste of my precious time, i rather play Fallout a bit..

i bet those ddos attacks are done by some pissed of users of nexus because the rules are sometimes ridiculous and admins give bans for everyone like santa gives presents on christmas so dear nexus - maybe it's not a coincidence, maybe you just asked for it and got it. nothing like this happens randomly

Or you could follow the rules. I've never been banned because I'm smart enough to not break any rules

The only thing I got from your post is that you hate the rules around here.

Well @ all those who're wondering - I don't know if that's what the original Comment was about, but I for sure know someone who made a Mod for Skyrim that's been deleted and banned, because of someone of Nexus' Staff didn't like it on here - whoever that was.

The Mod didn't do anything new, there are still lots of worse ones out there, and there really was no Reason to delete and ban this one Mod and be okay with all the others at the same Time, and Stuff like that. Stuff which, I gotta say that, was really unfair and something completely based on personal Judgement, like saying, "oh I [personally] don't like that one Mod on here, let's ban it". For Reasons that would have applied to lots of other Stuff as well, but yeah, obviously they did -just- apply for the one Mod someone didn't really like to see on here.

I can pretty much assure you there wasn't any other Reason to the Deletion of said Mod and as its Author questioned the Reasons why it was deleted while there still were all the others [which STILL haven't been deleted yet BTW], and was pretty much told to lay down, "or else"...

So yeah, if there were more Incidents like that, I could imagine that may be a Reason why. Sure, I still don't think it's right either, but it still may be a Reason for someone else.

If you came into my house, do I not have the right to ask you to leave. Even if I have no reason whatsoever. People may get their panties in a bunch over this stuff, but they just need to grow up. They can go to another site and put their mod there. They can create their own website. Or if they can just not mod anymore. The ball is in their court. Being butt-hurt doesn't help. And attacking a site that offers free, legal content to gamers is worse than childish.

I don't agree with banning the mod because you didn't like it. Some may like the mod. But, it is their site and they can do with it whatever they wish to. I see the point Flamey is trying to make with people DDoSing due to frustration. Also, they can make a website or any of those choices, but the fact is, it won't get very far since this is probably the site with the most people on involving mods.

      If I just may...

      "Hi <Name_Removed>,

I've taken a look at the report in the staff area and it looks like we've decided that we'd just rather not host the mod. We're not really happy with the images contained within the mod and while we respect your work, the time you put in it and the freedom you have to express yourself, we'd just rather not host it on the Nexus.

      I hope you understand.

      Regards,
      Robin"

"We're not really happy with the images contained within the mod". <- Reason.

Reading the ToS, anyone? Yeah, sure, ToS specify for sure some Mods may be removed without any Reason whatsoever, and after all, this IS a private hosted Site. The Mod's being hosted elsewhere, so that's not a Problem for said Mod, either.

But in Fact, this still has happened. With this exact Reason. And it's not been a Violation of said ToS. So, it's still a Matter about the Community itself.

I don't know about others, but this somehow disencourages People to continue sharing their Stuff on here, because they don't know whether or not the Staff is "really happy with the <Content> contained within the mod" you made or not, which I really think is a Shame.

This goes as far as me feeling queasy and being kinda worried right now, that the Staff might not be happy with me even posting this Comment here, either.

But, put all of that aside, I still think of Nexus as the biggest and best Resource for Mods and Modders. But apparently, it's not all that much about "the Community" as I feel it should be. Yeah, even while being private hosted, and all that, yes. Because, where's the Line...? Where the Responsibility towards the Community, which is all of us, is being outruled by your own Taste...?

Heavy Question. Though, I'll for sure stay and upload Mods here if I ever happen to create some, and I'll watch my Step, for sure. Just to play safe, ya know.

      *Addendum:
I might add that Nexus lost quite a few, actually many Users due to this Incident alone. People who felt being treated kinda unfair, who then uninstalled the Mod Manager and never came back. Sure - "let them go, no one's missing them"... but ya know... 'sall 'bout the Community, man.

snowden is busy with the UFO's  currently terrorizing the skies over moscow. He's explaining that it is part of a larger US conspiracy to make people believe in flying saucers to distract them from the truth of the United States having flying saucers since the end of World War II when plans and incomplete prototypes were seized from the Nazis. Roswell was a part of that cover-up, they deliberately stated it was a flying saucer of unknown origin so that they could retract the claim & convince the people that there was a conspiracy involving the cover-up of beings that do not exist. I doubt he has time to ddos the nexus, let alone actually get in any gaming time. From the amount of Morley butts found around the airport recently, Snowden should be extra careful as he's no doubt being watched for any mistake on his part by a very dangerous person involved in this cover-up.

You need a system/program that can limit the number of pings/requests/etc allowed from a single IP within a specified time, like say--- 100 pings/requests/etc every 10 seconds from a single IP and anything more than that is ignored/rejected/denied unless it is a transfer
(I think it would be best to have a separate system for transfers that can only be given limited commands from this domain (IE: Upload/Download stuff; no code execution allowed just strict storage)).
Working on becoming a white hat; still a bit new at it though.

Just throwing my 2 cents out there and hoping to be helpful. :]

Exactly. It's the moderation that, at core, makes this place great. The fact that legitimate users can come and go as they want, that modders can rest assured that their IPs are safe, and that the people we don't want to have to deal with, the trolls, the whiners, the people too selfish or too immature to follow the basic social norms of respecting their fellows, will have to go be annoying elsewhere.
