Author blocking, user area tweaks and general updates

  • Comment
A quick update today to let you know about a few new features we've added to the sites over the past few weeks.

Author blocking

First up we've implemented the ability to block user's files, images and videos from showing on the site at all for you, much like how our tag blocking system works. If you block an author you will no longer see any new files, images or videos they add on the site whether it's in the hot files, file searches or otherwise.

A lot of our Nexus sites have a lot of files in them now and we're happy to implement any functionality that lets you get more control over the type of content you really want to see and remove the types of content you have absolutely no interest in. As far as I'm concerned, mod authors get upset when users post on their files when it's clear the user has no interest in their work, and users complain at having to see content they have no interest in so, right now, there's absolutely no reason to complain at all.

To block an author simply go to their profile and select the blocking option at the top. To unblock an author go back to their profile to unblock them. We've also created a page for you to quickly see what authors you're blocking and manage your blocked authors from there.

Site news notifications and remove all notifications option

We've added a new notification preference for site news. If you keep it on then the notification system will notify you any time site news, like this one, is posted.

We've added an option in the notifications drop-down to quickly clear and remove all your notifications. You can find it in the bottom-right hand corner of the notifications window.

User area tweaks to account for Premium Membership

We've made some small tweaks to your user area to have a specific section just for Premium and Supporter membership information. At least 50% of the time I spend on support for the site is taken up by Premium Members who message me about things to do with their payments. For example, a lot of it is Premium Members asking me to cancel their recurring payments when they haven't paid via the recurring payment method. By default all Premium Membership payments are non-recurring, as in you pay once and when your Premium Membership expires that's it, no more money is taken and no more Premium Membership time is given unless you choose to pay again. You can choose to set up a recurring payment to the sites that will continually renew your membership as it's about to expire but this is not the default payment option. This is all explained on the Premium page and when paying but I guess some users just forget.

We've added a new section to tell you whether you're Premium, whether you're a Supporter, whether your payment is recurring and how much Premium time you've got left. If your payment is recurring we've provided a Wiki page explaining how you can cancel your recurring payment (it's very easy!). Hopefully this should reduce some support time for me. I doubt it, but you never know!

I look at this as a way of having less pages(Blocking the mods that i dont really use at all or dont like) when i am searching a mod i want but forgot name

It is quite a useful feature.

I like that. It is possible to block authors whose mods one consistently don't like. It is useful when checking 'New Recently', so one does not waste time. Also people who don't like certain type of mods will not be leaving stupid comments on discussion boards of those mods, because they would, hopefully, block authors and never learn about the mods.

Sorry but my brain is spinning round in its bone shell.
Why would anyone want to block any Auther?
If you don't like what someone has taken time, skill and effort to make for the benifit of others.
    Don't look at it.
No one can please all of the people all of the time.
remember if you keep looking at stuff you don't like.
In no way has the Auther forced you to do that.
The cure is in your own hands, just don't look at it.

Then follow your own advice -- the solution is in your own hands: don't use it.

Some people are big enough spazzes that they require self-moderation placebos. As in, they are so bothered by the idea that things are being posted that they don't like that now they have the option to erase it from ever reaching their eyeballs.

You are most likely a well-mannered reasonable human being so its only natural that this process seems alien.

      @ Eiries

Or maybe people like options? the option to get rid of those authors who mis-tag things, the EWI's of this world who spam the place up with 2K spoon textures or those who spam the imageshare with five or even ten images at a time, all of them crap.

If you don't like the thing then don't use it, there's no need to be unpleasant about those that do.

o12no1, color me confused... If you don't like the feature, and then don't use it. This is remarkably similar concept as yours. No one forces you to use blocking feature.

Back to this topic: While I haven't make any comment, complaint, nor in any blog entry regarding functions and features, I find this recently-added author-blocking feature seriously useful. Certain types of mods (skinny armors, anime mods, and a few) have always bother me. I had been putting up with these kind of stuff until now. No longer and no more.

      Thanks Dark0ne and staffs!

      Cheers,
      Dakkon

      @Eiries:

Some people want to be able to hide mods by authors who aren't actually mod authors at all, but merely those who translate mods to their own native language and share the result. While that's certainly an worthwhile pursuit that I would never dream of asking the Nexus to put a stop to on my account, I don't need to see supercento's string of uploads every time he gets a few days off and converts his favourite mods to Spanish. I don't speak Spanish, so I'm never going to need his uploads.

You appear to think of yourself as a well-mannered reasonable human being. So I would respectfully request that you please consider your words more carefully before you post them rather than going off on a tangent about people you don't even know.

but merely those who translate mods

There's a "translation" tag for that you can block that was implemented months ago for that very reason.
      going off on a tangent

      That's kind of an exaggeration.

See, I'll never understand that. Like o12no1 said, there's always gonna the things around you you're not gonna like, you just scroll past it. I feel this applies a hundredfold in the Imageshare. Even if someone isn't producing content you like at this moment, they may improve or expand their scope of modding/screenshooting later and make something you could really enjoy, and you wouldn't realize it. Because in the process of taking advantage of your options, you ended up cutting them down in the long run.

To each their own I suppose. The option isn't going to hurt anyone that avoids it. Apologies if my original post appeared antagonistic, it really wasn't supposed to be.

If a mod author blocks you from downloading his addons, it's useful for actually removing them from the site instead of stumbling on them and getting a 503 error.

There may also be some mod authors whose mods you find utterly tasteless.

Short answer is narrowing the mods to look through by removing authors you know make stuff you do not like. Take anime stuff, if you know an author who makes anime style armor and you despise anime you can block them and now you will have a shorter list of armors to browse knowing that his anime armors are not in the list. Yeah you can ignore the stuff but if an author makes quite allot it can add many more pages to browse through.

Blocking an author's content is doing exactly what you're suggesting people do: Not looking at things they don't like.

You, on the other hand, could be not looking at this feature if its mere existence offends you so much, but instead of taking your own advice, you're here complaining about the settings other people use on their own damn accounts. Pretty hypocritical, yeah?

Author blocking is useful to me but only in a minor way. Although it will be nice to just say no to flesh mod authors and the unending stream of skimpy little girl follower mods, but a limit of 32 is not that useful (if that is indeed the case).

Tag blocking doesn't really work since to block other languages or skimpy mods since you end up blocking mods you wanted if the mod is poorly tagged. Improving the tag blocking system so certain choices preclude others for example would be the best improvement. I.e. a mod cant both be lore friendly AND have skimpy or be an anim mod, or be in English AND multi-lingual.

All that matters to me as a user is getting better searches. To that end, blocking individual mods with no limit (or say 1000) would be helpful. You end up doing similar searches a lot and this would streamline your use of the search system allowing blocking of non-English mods and mods you know to be defective, similar to another but lesser in your opinion, or dare I say, non-original. In any case, the theme here ought to be more choice is better so thanks.

It would be nice to be able to block individual users from accessing your files without requiring that they post a comment. This restriction is easily circumvented by habitual content thieves and they often just delete your posts asking them to remove stolen content despite the original requirement of having a certain number of unique downloads before having that option. What's worse is that they can block you (the author of the stolen content) from ever seeing their mods if you do happen to post a comment, allowing them to get away with content theft that much more easily, since it's then up to other users to report their activities.

The current system requires that the individual post a comment on a mod you've authored in order to be able to block them. This only protects the thieves, as they quickly learn not to post comments on mod pages of those from whom they plan to steal.

While I welcome this new option of blocking users whose content we're not interested in seeing,I'd like to see a little more protection for mod authors themselves. The report system is fine, but Nexus staff are not available around the clock and it sometimes takes several days to a week or more for reports to get resolved.

I strongly agree with having more protection for mod authors. I say this because I have seen content being sold in Second Life where the "creator" has clearly just stolen the content and repackaged it as their "own." This is true for content hosted on the Nexus, as well as content stolen from the likes of Bethesda, CDProjeckt Red, Tera online and others. I hope that more will be done to protect the work of the mod authors who spend so much time and effort on their creations.

Nice. There is no shortage of authors who post characters in bikini "armor" with oversized breasts etc. Especially on Skyrim Nexus. Now i don't have to see it anymore if i choose, and enjoy the good mods\pictures. Thanks for that!

Oh god yes. I hate to be a whiny wimp about it but something about that exaggerated sexiness and nudity has made me very sad over time. I just don't want to be confronted with other peoples masturbation material lol. To each their own ofc... it just isn't for everyone, but you have no choice but to have it get thrown in your face constantly... I'm very glad thats over ^^ Thanks!
