Downloading issues update

  • Comment
Following on from an update on the downloading situation made at the start of the month I want to write a quick post to say we're still working on the CDN setup I touted in the original update.

Many people are (wrongly) blaming the new download system we added to the site back in the middle of June, which worked fine up until the Steam sales made everything go a bit crazy. To enable us to fully discount this update as a factor for those of you who are getting slow downloads and downloading issues we've re-enabled the old file server selection download method which we'll likely keep up and running until tomorrow morning for our own piece of mind. This will enable us to monitor the situation and conclude whether it's having any factor on the downloading issues.

Talking of the Steam Summer sale, which ended at the start of this month, we're still seeing unchanged and unprecedented registration traffic on the network since the end of the sale which is the driver for all the download issues occuring. For example, yesterday we hit 9,500 new registrations and today, a Monday (which are typically our slowest days), we've already had 6,200 new registrations with 7 hours of the day still left to go. We're not entirely sure what's driving this big influx of new users well past the end of the Steam sale, all we know is it's happening and we're working to sort out our file server infrastructure to make sure it's no longer an issue. For a more detailed explanation of what we're doing please refer to the news article linked at the start of this post.

There's a newer news article exactly about this. I will lock this one now so people don't get confused.

I feel there is a need for an update on the progress made on the client/download system. I somewhat feel that this subject tapered off and I just feel like perhaps we should receive an update? this was posted a month, almost two months ago and I browsed it and nothing downloads correctly or at all for me so.. Update Please? Administration? Moderators? Someone PM me or chat or something so I can receive an update?

Adding my own experiences over the last few days attempting to mod Skyrim - w/POSSIBLE SOLUTION:

    - Was unable to download almost a third of the mods - no information displayed about connection status, they would simply either be complete or fail with an error and be marked incomplete.

    - Based on reading that premium users could still select servers from within the NMM (0.52.1) preferences, I signed up again (always a good idea!) and was able to download about half of the remainiing files after multiple tries through multiple server selections; now information about the connection speed as well as the file size and threads (sometimes) was displayed in the client.

    - The rest simply will not download at all: connection speeds of 9-14 Kbps show up in orange at the bottom of the client, and after a few minutes of no further information, the download errors out and shows as incomplete. Attempts to download manually are met with a "waiting for filedelivery.nexusmods.com" message in the browser, with no further action after the "we are preparing your file . . ." dialogue box - even after 15 plus minutes (Vilja, I am looking at you!)

    - This does not change no matter what server I select. Mods include Vilja, SMIM, Falskar, Immersive Weapons/Armor, and various HD texture packs. Fun fact: most, but not all, are listed as not scanned for virus, even after many months.

Tried DNS reassignment, but no effect, bben.

    UPDATE:

As I am writing this, the Vilja and Faskar manual downloads finally responded with a dialogue box!! Took over 20 minutes   Chose to open with NMM client (manually browsed to it in the Program Files folder). After a short time, got the "{filename} has been added" message, and able to confirm the mods' presence in my GAMES\SKYRIM\MODS folder. A royal pain, but works for those of us that can download some, but not all of the mods we want.

It seems the NMM client simply times out after a few minutes, whereas the browser is willing to wait indefinitely (even if we are not!)

I hope that this helps enough motivated people who simply want to get their favorite mods downloaded and get to the fun of tinkering until our games actually work as intended (by me )

    - Erikose

We know about the plugin names issue and are looking at ways of resolving it. It's to do with the CDN move and not being able to use certain server settings that we originally could.

Should I post about my issue in another section and, if so, in which one? It would be nice to have it fixed as it makes the plugin names so messy.

Possible workaround, use manual download, the file names are correct, only download with manager automatic downloads messes up the file name.

    What browser are you using?
    Have tried using any other?
What what are some of the specific files involved so we can test?

I don't think my browser has anything to do with it as this is downloads via NMM, but I'm using Chrome. I just checked and I have the same issue with Firefox. Check the picture in my earlier post for lots of different archives with this issue. Two examples:

"%20" is the ASCII code for " ", ("space", "blank") .

    ASCII Table Organization

The code itself was patterned so that most control codes were together, and all graphic codes were together, for ease of identification. The first two columns (32 positions) were reserved for control characters  The "space" character (an "invisible graphic") had to come before the other graphics to make sorting easier, so it became position 20(hex).

Sometimes a client will display the code, rather than the character.  This something at your end.

Does this happen every time?  Does this happen with every similar file?  Does this happen with files for a specific game, or all games?

I'm only playing Skyrim ATM, so no idea about other games. It started happening August 28:th. Before that it had never happened - after that it happens with almost all downloads, but not all. Using NMM 0.52.1.

Here's a screenshot of the download folder:

Not sure where to put this question, but I have an issue with NMM downloads since a while, namely that most downloaded archives get a lot of added %20 signs. It can look like this:
