SOME FIXES IN VERSION 3.5

NEW STREAMLINED VERSION, ALL BUGS FIXED, OPTIMIZED FASTER SCRIPTS AND LESS OF THEM, FAR EASIER INSTALLATION, NO AUTORUN OR AUTOMOVE PROBLEMS

BE CAREFUL:
This mod needs OBSE v0009a to work.
OBSE (Oblivion Script Extender) is a software which expands scripting functions in the construction set. It's really invaluable and you should all use it.

You can download it here:

WHAT THIS MOD DOES:

This mod tries to enhance the feeling of realism related to running in-game.
The mod has a modular setup so you can choose what you like and what you don't like.

The sprint functionality is totally configurable, you can easily choose the key to make your character sprint from an in-game menu.

There are three areas which this mod tackles, related to running.

-----------

1) THIS MOD GIVES YOU THE OPTION TO SPRINT IN-GAME

This mod makes it possible to sprint in-game by pressing a specific, configurable key.

CAREFUL: To sprint, your forward movement and running key have to be pressed also, so choose a sprint key not too far from the vanilla keys.

I found it strange that you can run without losing fatigue and I think the running in-game is quite like a marathon style running.
So I added a sprint style running in-game so you can make brief but very fast runs.

This can be useful for instance if you want to get away from a situation too hot for your character.

When you press the sprint key you get a speed boost and run forward very fast, but your fatigue goes down very fast and when it gets too low you stop sprinting but continue running.
You can't use this feature continuously because you have to wait for your fatigue to reach a good value again, otherwise your run will be too brief.

I don't think this is in any way unbalancing, it's realistic because in real life you can run at different paces too.

Moreover I added a big penalty: while you are sprinting your heavy armor and light armor skills go all the way down to zero because you cannot be able to defend yourself while running at this speed and any blow you should get would be heavily amplified by your very speed.

So this is just useful for running away from situations or making brief very fast runs.

As you get higher speed and athletics, you will be able to sprint faster and for longer periods of time.

2) THIS MOD OPTIONALLY MODIFIES HOW BACKWARDS RUNNING WORKS

BACKWARDS SPEED: This part of the mod can lower your speed attribute while you are running backwards (it stays the same while you're walking), so as to make it impossible to solve battles with kiting.
The speed attribute goes back to normal when you stop running backwards, simple as that.

The idea behind this was originally Krytonix's.
His script was done without OBSE support, and it is an excellent but quite cpu heavy script.
Then Martigen created the first OBSE version of the script, with about 1/10 of code in respect to Krytonix's version.

Martigen's script was functioning only with the default S key for backpedaling and it slowed down both backwards walking and running.

This new version works with any key or mouse configuration and lowers only running speed.

Anyway I changed just 5-6 lines in Martigen's script, so hats off and credit to him.

This part of the mod has a a special version which you can choose, compatible with FRANCESCO's leveled creatures-items mod. Francesco's mod uses the first script by Krytonix.
When two different mods use scripts with the same name, sadly Oblivion runs them both in-game, so the name really doesn't matter. Just choose the appropriate option when prompted in the installer.

3) THIS MOD OPTIONALLY MODIFIES THE WAY RUNNING AFFECTS FATIGUE

I think it is unrealistic the way running doesn't get you fatigued in-game, so I tried many different possibilities and came up with this.

Now running will make you get fatigued, but less so as you get better with athletics.
It works like this: your fatigue will get lower while you're running, until it reaches about 5% of your total fatigue. Then you will start walking and you will not be able to run until you have "recollected yourself". So when your fatigue gets back to 40% you'll be able to run again.

The following statements are only indicative because all heavily depends on your character and situation:

As an Athletics Novice you'll run for about 1 minute then walk a little before being able to run again
As an Apprentice 2-3 minutes
As a Journeyman 3-4 minutes
As an Expert 5-6 minutes
As a Master 8-10 minutes or more

As you can see it will be no big trouble because you can run a lot without problems, only if you are low level you need to walk more often to recover fatigue. As a Master you can run as an olympics level (5000 km) athlete.

-----------

COMPLETE RUNNING EXPERIENCE
All parts of this mod work seamlessly together and they make running quite interesting when you use them all.
For instance sprinting must be used more wisely when the 3rd part (fatigue modifications) is active, because you wouldn't want to find yourself unable to run for exhaustion while in a dungeon... Your fatigue will recover pretty fast, but what if it's not fast enough?

-----------

CONFIGURATION MENU
The first time you play with DA Sprint.esp activated the menu will come up automatically, just follow instructions.
If you want to recall the menu while playing, press your chosen Sprint key together with your Right Slide and Left Slide keys.
If you don't use the sprinting part of the mod, there wont' be any menu (no need for one).

-----------

INSTALLATION:
1) Uninstall any previous version of my mod with the uninstaller or manually. If you have any of these files in the data folder, they must be deleted:

Sprint.esp, ReducedBackwardsRunningSpeed.esp, Fatigued Running.esp, Run Fatigue.esm (version 1)
DA Sprint.esp, DA ReducedBackwardsRunningSpeed.esp, DA Fatigued Running.esp, DA Run Fatigue.esm (version 2)

2) If you did not do this already, download and install OBSE 0009a. OBSE adds a file called obse_loader.exe in your oblivion folder, to run oblivion use that file from now on. You can change the destination in your oblivion shortcut from oblivion.exe to obse_loader.exe

3) Download and execute RunningSetup.exe and follow the on-screen instructions.

4) Make a clean save before activating the mod.

5) IMPORTANT: If you changed the always run key in the game options for older versions of this mod, change it back to the key you want to use, now it works with no problem.

5) Activate all .esm and .esp plugins added by the installation program (up to four files).

-----------

COMPATIBILITY:
This mod should be compatible with most anything except mods that change the way running and fatigue work. See above for compatibility with Francesco's.

KNOWN ISSUES:
-Sometimes when you load a game you'll have to wait for 2 seconds for the scripts to kick in.

-If you use sprinting, after the first time you close the configuration menu you will probably have to hit the Automove key twice before it works as supposed. Just this once though, after which it will work normally forever and ever.
