Newly appointed to Silencer, Gorath's first assignment was to eliminate Ulrich Leland. Apparently, the captain's corruption had gotten so bad that the service of the Dark Brotherhood became necessary.
Gorath's Master insisted that the deeds of this assignment was to be seen by the world. The Dark Brotherhood needed to reassert itself in the nightmares of the commoners.
Thus, the slaughter of Ulrich Leland and his two bodyguards was so terrible that witnesses would not leave their homes for days.
When they did speak, they seemed mesmerized NOT by the exquisitely horrid demon mask, nor the flaming claymore, but rather the simple elegance in which he killed his targets.
And they also were fixated by the stunning woman that came to him after it was done ... the lady that made this demon assassin doubt his purpose ...
