About this image
In my opinion, the best companions in Oblivion :)
Room 207's Shazzan, and Zella's Tonbogiri.
BTW, if anybody has trouble with companions attacking one another (including animals), I highly recommend, in conjunction:
Ring of Companionship
Active Inventory Spell
These two provide you with non-attack rings to give to your companions, and if they are creatures, you can use the spell to access their inventories.

Anvil looks awesome in your setup too.
I've found, after having been spoiled by the absolutely superlative companions in Morrowind and Skyrim (specifically, the likes of Julan and Inigo), that I've become very picky, so I prefer creature companions in Oblivion. This is always subjective, but I honestly feel these two are the very best of those available. Shazzan is a very magical cat who heals and buffs, while Tonbo is an excellent little fighter. I do a lot of ranged damage with my characters, so we make a great team.
Thanks on Anvil, btw.
If you decide to rebuild your game, feel free to shoot me a message, if you like, and I'll try to remember what exactly I have installed.
I still have to man myself up to install Oblivion Reloaded
busewaterdisplacement set to 0
OR's author also adds some default settings that change a few things with gameplay... Some fighting animations, and rest/wait options, I believe, so you'll want to look at the various Ini files to see which you want to keep. I wish I could tell you more in detail, but it's been a while, so I can't recall all the specifics.
Also, this may help you. I listed a bunch of stuff I use here:

Speaking of OR... I had such an idiot moment earlier. At least it felt like it. Since dusting off Oblivion a few days ago, I'd noticed that the water was behaving oddly, in that the ripple animations were jerky. I was certain I'd have noticed something like this before... and I was equally certain I hadn't done any tinkering with the game since last playing. So, I tested game settings.. looked at my Nvidia settings... and dug through Google. Finally I came across a post in Reddit... the solution was to restart my computer.
Honestly... I should have tried this initially, because it's a cardinal rule, no matter the situation: FIRST, try turning off your computer!
However, after the above I had another idiot moment, because in trying to fix the twitching water, I had inadvertently turned Water Displacement back on when I turned Ripples on in the ingame settings. The OR page says it needs to be on ... but apparently this is actually part of the water displacement issue when using an ENB.
Lessons learned... *sigh*
Well..for what it is worth, they are both extremely tough. Though, I can certainly understand that concern (that said, truthfully...bandits and the like have MUCH MORE reason to be concerned... Tonbo is.. "feisty" )
