About this image
I wanted to put something together for all those people who have been so encouraging and welcoming since I began posting screenshots in the Oblivion Share area... :)
When I first played this game... I wasn't necessarily a fan. Yet, I kept trying to enjoy it over the years with different installs... Even though I had my quibbles with Oblivion, I knew that it was very much a diamond in the rough, and a great deal of it, for me, was about peeling away the rough so that it could shine.. Of course, this is all very subjective, we all respond differently to various media, art etc. and we all have our personal views on how something can be ameliorated. Thus everything I say here, bears reference to that. ;)
A little over a year ago I was fortunate enough to be able to build a modern gaming computer... After playing various new titles, and creating the Morrowind and Skyrim of my dreams.. it was Oblivion's turn. I can truly say that I really do love this game now, and all of you have helped... in your advice, encouragement, and friendliness. I really do mean the latter, as well.. in no other area of Nexus have as many people added me to their friend's list, or been as helpful. With all of you, I've been able to put together the Oblivion install I've always wanted; previously, either I couldn't find the inspiration, the mods I longed for did not exist, or I didn't have the computer to run everything nicely.
But.. now I can... Thank you.
I have been aiming for a look that blends photorealism and magical realism.. and in that, thanks to numerous helpful suggestions, and browsing the lovely images so many have posted.. I think I have succeeded. I may still tinker a bit, but I think I'm essentially there.
I found the easiest way to share these images was by creating an account with Imgur, so you can see the rest of this set here.
To accompany the visuals.. some music that seems to fit:
ugh... looks like either YouTube or Nexus is causing problems, and I can't seem to edit out the empty black box below, so here is a link instead: Mystic's dream.

One thing I had intended to do with my original post (my cat distracted me), was to list the visual and atmospheric mods I'm using in this "final' version of my install, so as to give those authors credit for their wonderful work. As I said, I may still tinker here and there, but I essentially have the look I was hoping for.
First off, I refer you to Bevilex's excellent guide on creating a beautiful and stable Oblivion. While some of my visuals differ, most notably my ENB and weather, my approach to building the game is extremely similar:

Tools & Stability
Landscape LOD generator tes4ll-v5, by Gruftikus and Lightwave
Land magic by LostIchi
Wrye Bash ( Learn to use it.. Seriously! )
OBMM for just a few mods
A Note on NMM ... Don't use it. Just don't. It can be fine for Skyrim, but Oblivion and Morrowind were never designed to be used with it. (2023 EDIT: I'd also apply this to MO2...it's a good manager, but Wrye Bash is better for Oblivion... Also, just avoid Vortex; it doesn't work well with old games like this)
Tes4 EDIT
LOOT (though many people say BOSS is much better for Oblivion if you have things like Better Cities installed, which isn't in my load order)
4 GB Patch (2023: Obsolete with GOG version of the game)
More Heap (2023: Obsolete, replaced by Oblivion Reloaded Combined)
Oblivion Stutter Remover (2023: replaced with Oblivion Reloaded Combined)
Engine Bug Fixes

2023: some edits
I've wanted to create a lovely Oblivion install for some time, but the thought of doing the actual modding was just painful.. because with this game it is so much more complicated to get everything working right. I'm very pleased I stuck with it, though.
I am off modding atm due to a not working graphic card. I am working on it and will be back - if the Nine want me too.
Thanks a lot for your contributions so far.
And thanks to you, as well.
I was in a similar situation some months ago. In january, after modding Skyrim and Fallout 4, I bought Oblivion (again) and started modding it…
I hope you will not stop posting and modding the game :p There are many mods to discover here on the Nexus and elsewhere
Time to sleep now .. thank you for the relaxing music
*chuckles* While I would love to add every lovely Oblivion mod to my game... I've learned from painful past experience that maintaining some willpower isn't a bad thing.
I do plan to still add one or two major quest mods, such as Reclaiming Sancre Tor, and probably a few more house mods as well. However, I need to be careful at this point with the visuals.. my game is already a bit less stable than I'd ideally like. It's the price you pay, but I think it's worth it, as long as things don't become *too* unstable. And the thing is, I don't think I could actually go back now, it's a bit like developing a taste for high quality coffee or fine wine... after a while, you just don't want to return to what you were drinking before.
wonderful set of images, especially the main... Great work !
Loreena McKennitt is one of my favourite artists, and it was hard to think of something better suited to the image set.
