About this image

White areas indicate cities.
Red areas indicate farmland.
The green box indicates the player character's starting location (an interior cell still under construction).
Yellow lines indicate dirt roads.
Black lines indicate paved roads (ditches unconfirmed).
The grey area indicates inaccessible territory.
Red lines indicate entry points into neighbouring zones (border gates). All border gates will remain locked but will gradually become unlocked as neighbouring zones are completed.

    Looks like the idea in good old Gothic times that an area is limited by natural barriers

      A fully open world would be an unrealistic objective (considering also the level of detail I would like to achieve), and invisible walls kill the immersion, so this is the approach I've taken.

      Actually, the initial inspiration for natural barriers came from MMORPGs in general, which typically divide their game worlds into isolated zones like this. I can see why you would see some Gothic influence here though. In addition to a few other RPGs, Gothic has definitely been a major source of inspiration for much of this project
