About this image

So, this is Vilja in the loo near the Abandoned Mountain Shack.
I don't know how to comment on that.

Any ideas for a caption from you guys? Or, perhaps it's better to just let it drop ... (oops, sorry, har-har).

Instruction Manual

To prevent damage to the loo as well as injury to persons using the loo please read this Instruction Manual carefully before using it.

Store this Instruction Manual in a safe place for future reference. Please note that these toilets have limited storage capacity and must be pumped and periodically cleaned by the user or a septic company.

A "privy" is a small wood structure that encompasses walls, roof, a door for privacy, a rudimentary ventilation system, and one or more seats placed over a pit dug to receive the ususal toilet wastes.

Keep in mind that:
1. you should collect food scraps in a separate compost container. If you collect food scraps in this toilet, you risk a fruit fly infestation.
2. a 5-gallon toilet receptacle filled to the brim may be too heavy for many people to handle.
3. this toilet should be located in a private, comfortable setting, indoors year-round or outdoors in warmer climates, if desired.
4. these toilets are best located where the receptacles can be easily removed to an outdoor compost bin.
5. toilet containers may smell bad. That is why they should be cleaned when they are emptied by using a long handled toilet brush, a little dish soap and water. DON'T use your bare hands!
6. after emptying and cleaning the person in question should always wash her or his hands!
7. this toilet is no playground for children!
8. to avoid the risk of loss you should pay attention to not let something valuable hang into the receptacle.
(...your sword f.e. )
9. during a long and excessive and/or extensive use a lot of methane gas can form, so DON'T smoke inside! DON'T use ANYTHING that has to do with open flames! Seriously! DON'T!
Methane explosions can be dangerous!

As an additional information: Lime is traditionally used to reduce the odors or smells and that it reduces the problem of flies in the outhouse. But, watch out: don't get lime on the toilet seat - it will cause skin burns!

Alternatives for Lime are:
- a thin layer of sawdust after using the outhouse.
- Cedar shavings work even better and may provide a more pleasant smell. In a remote area if sawdust or wood shavings are not available, even dry leaves may help reduce odors.
- Wood ash: If your home includes a woodstove, wood ashes can also be sprinkled over waste in the outhouse.
- Straw (or chopped straw) or even peat moss: to encourage the formation of a crust. (the crust also reduces outhouse odors and flies).

(in this post I used some informative lines and facts from "inspectapedia.com/septic/" and "humanurehandbook.com/manual.html" - highly modified by me, of course - all the other silly stuff was my idea. )
