About this image

Yeah, another sketchy project of a retex. I know there's a number of these already - some even very recent, and they are really nice, but hey, plenty's no plague :D
Plus, I wanted to share with you the feeling some of you may be familiar with - sometimes you're short of time, or simply lazy, and you test a few random textures simultaneously, just to see each of them in game and separate the wheat from the chaff. It's quite a rare thing to strike gold while blindly tossing them around, yet sometimes it does happen. I think I've found just the perfect unlikely pair. It seems the only thing left to be done is designing smooth transitions between these two (there are three different ones actually, but one of them probably will be left out or replaced anyway).

Do you like such a combination for fort ruins?

It makes me think of a wall that somebody tried to rebuild after a destruction (or patched to avoid the total destruction)... The idea pleases me.

Makczopikczo, you know I do not speak English. Nevertheless, you have asked for our opinion, and here is mine:

The idea is great. Roman (ie Imperial) walls battered and then bettered by Celtic/German folk as well as they could do in the hurry. That is the idea, right?

But. Looking innocently at the picture one could not tell wether it is

    a) a kernel of burned red clay with a layer of rough stones where some of
    the latter fell apart from
    or, vice versa,
    b) a wall of sturdy rough stones, where someone with even less skill than
time had filled the gaps with red burned clay stones.

Of course it is b) , but one could not tell from the picture alone.

Perhaps it is all about the region where the two sorts of textures meet. Make it very clear (at least from a few steps afar) what came first and your audience´s applause is yours (as always).

    Cheers, TesaPlus.

EDIT a few minutes later:In the other picture (that one with the fort) it looks just right to me; perhaps because one does not come so close up there? I guess, I would have to look in-game at your work in order to judge?

I really like the older looking stones and that some of them are missing.
Very authentic, just like an old wall should look.

I' not sure about the red ones.
They are nice too, but (you asked for my/our opinion!^^) I think they look out of place here. Not only because of their color - it's a completely different kind of stone/building material. Too "modern" - if you know what I mean.

The bricks would look better for a house texture.
For a fort, we expect to see large stones... makes us think of protection and safety.
