Homemade Flamethrower

This mod adds two new weapons to the world of New Vegas, the Homemade Flamethrower, and it's unique variant, the Quantum Flamethrower. The Flamethrowers are based heavily on the one from the video game: "The Last Of Us." and just like in that game, they're perfect for getting rid of unwanted, nightmare inducing monsters! The Homemade Flamethrower is intended as an early-mid game weapon that can be upgraded at higher levels to keep up. The weapon and its mods can be crafted by the player if they have the required materials and skill level. However, the player may also try to repair one that can be found in one well known scrap yard near Novac, again, as long as they have the necessary skill level. The Flamethrower is distributed in some level lists, so you may see it in the hands of a few raiders, and it may show up in some vendor's inventories. These weapons feature new meshes and textures, a custom Pipboy Icon, and a new sound that plays if you are out of ammo. Version 1.2 adds a new, unique variant for those of you with the Gun Runners Arsenal DLC installed. It works much the same way that the weapon 'Clensing Flame' works in that DLC, it has blue flames, the unique Damage Over Time effect, and it performs better than the original flamethrower in pretty much every way. It can be crafted once the player reaches a high level.

RageNClear has created an amazing custom animation set for this mod which you can find here!

Workbench Requirements & Location

To include the new Quantum variant of the Flamethrower, a bit of rebalancing had to be done. In order for me to release both a DLC and non-DLC version, the balancing of both versions is different. In the DLC version, a fully upgraded Homemade flamethrower will do less damage than the one from the non-DLC version, but will have lower requirements and the option to upgrade to the Quantum version. The non-DLC balancing is unchanged from previos versions and is as follows:

Non-DLC Version

The Flamethrower has two modifications;
  • Expanded Tanks  - Increases Ammo Capacity
  • Improved Nozzle - Increases Damage

Both of these mods, as well as the Flamethrower itself can be crafted at the Workbench, the weapon and mod workbench requirements are outlined below:

Homemade Flamethrower:
  • 2 Lead Pipes
  • 2 Duct Tape
  • 2 Flamer Fuel
  • 2 Scrap Metal
  • Repair Skill of 40

Expanded Tanks:
  • 2 Flamer Fuel
  • 1 Wrench
  • 1 Scrap Metal
  • 1 Duct Tape
  • Repair Skill of 50

Improved Nozzle:
  • 1 Flamer
  • 2 Scrap Metal
  • 1 Wonderglue
  • 1 Hammer
  • Repair Skill of 80

Yes, the improved nozzle has a very high skill requirement, this is the late game upgrade for the weapon as it nearly doubles the damage dealt by the Flamethrower. The Flamethrower is also available in the Gibson Scrap yard, just outside Novac. There is a broken Flamethrower against the wall beside the workbench inside. If the player has a repair skill of 30 or more they can repair the broken Flamethrower and use it.

DLC Version

Homemade Flamethrower:
  • 2 Lead Pipes
  • 2 Duct Tape
  • 2 Flamer Fuel
  • 2 Scrap Metal
  • Repair Skill of 35

Expanded Tanks:
  • 2 Flamer Fuel
  • 1 Wrench
  • 1 Scrap Metal
  • 1 Duct Tape
  • Repair Skill of 40

Improved Nozzle:
  • 1 Flamer
  • 2 Scrap Metal
  • 1 Wonderglue
  • 1 Hammer
  • Repair Skill of 65

Quantum Flamethrower:

  • 1 Homemade Flamethrower
  • 2 Duct Tape
  • 2 Scrap Metal
  • 2 Wonderglue
  • Repair skill of 85

The Flamethrowers can be repaired using each other, Shishkebabs, Lead Pipes and Flamers. I'm not quite sure what else once Jury Rigging comes into play but if you don't have that perk those are the only weapons that can repair the Flamethrower.

Damage

Non-DLC Version
The Homemade Flamethrower does slightly less damage than the Flamer without any modifications. It also has a much smaller ammo capacity. The weapon's projectile has a bit longer reach, as I found the vanilla one to be frustratingly short. If you are lucky enough to score a critical hit on your opponent as they die they will explode into many many fiery pieces, which is always fun. After you upgrade the Flamethrower with the Improved Nozzle attachment, it's damage will practically double, making it a liiiiitle bit overpowered, at least where fire weapons are concerned in this game, but to be honest the Flamer is a hot pile of garbage so that doesn't really say much. The improved weapon will do more damage than both the Flamer and it's unique variant, Cleansing Flame. Couple that with Optimized Fuel and you've got a fire based weapon that's actually worth using past level 10. The Flamethrower is also affected by the Pyromaniac perk.

DLC Version
The way the DLC version works is pretty similar, except the mods for the Homemade Flamethrower are easier to get and the damage boost from the Improved nozzle isn't as big. However, when you upgrade to the Unique Quantum Flamethrower variant all that (Slightly) overpowered wonderfulness comes back, making the flamethrower act like an actual flamethrower, not like the hairdryer 'Flamers' in the base game. Again the Quantum Flamethrower is affected by the Pyromaniac perk.

Bits & Bobs

To get the fire effects you can see in the screenshots, I would recommend you download and install ExE by weijiesen.

The reload animations are a bit wonky as, to my knowledge, there aren't really any similar weapons to this in the base game and I am not able to make my own animations. The reload animation on the weapon at the moment fits pretty well all things considered, but there is room for improvement. The Flamethrower also suffers from the same firing sound bug as the Gatling Laser and Minigun, I am working on a fix but it's not going fantastically well. I would recommend you install Automatic Weapons Fix - Minigun-Gatling-Chainsaw and more by HeroinZero to fix this bug, I haven't tested it myself due to lack of time but these weapons use the same firing sound as the Flamer and this mod fixes the firing sound bug with that weapon.

Feel free to upload your own screenshots to the mod page under the images tab, I enjoy seeing what others can do with the weapons I make! :D
If you are planning on making a video featuring my weapon I encourage you to do so, and, if you can, let me know if you upload it so I can add it to the mod page. If you encounter any obvious bugs while recording I would really appreciate it if you would let me know and give me a chance to fix them before you upload the video. I understand that this is not always possible due to time constraints and whatnot, but if it's at all possible that'd be swell :)

As I say in all my mod descriptions, please report any bugs or glitches you find to me, either via message or on the mod page, thanks! And thanks for checking out my mod! Don't forget to endorse if you like this or any other mod, it might only take a few seconds of your time but it can mean a lot to the mod authors that make all the amazing content on this website. Show them you appreciate the work they put in!

Changelog
09-04-2017 V1.3:GRA exclusive update, makes minor texture and mesh tweaks to the Quantum Flamethrower, as well as increasing it's ammo capacity and the rate it burns fuel for balance. Includes a little Easter Egg on the Quantum Flamethrower for those of you that look to the light when you're in the darkness.
09-04-2017 V1.2:Added the missing DOT effects pointed out by derpyspoon7 (Thank you very much, and sorry for mildly dismissing your bug fix, that was immature and ignorant of me), Added the Quantum Flamethrower in a separate, GRA dependent file. Reworked the balancing of both weapons in that file only.
02-04-2017 V1.1:Fixed wonky looking trigger for modded Flamethrower world models. Fixed inversion the Y axis of custom Normal Maps, the can muzzle and grip should be less shiny now.
